Catherine Moran Smedley, loving mother and friend of the Catholic Church of St. Ignatius, Kingston, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025. She was 90 years old.
Catherine is the wife of the late William P. Smedley, M.D. She was a lifelong resident of Kingston and a graduate of Kingston High School.
Catherine later pursued her music degree with a scholarship to College Misericordia and double majored in education. Catherine enjoyed performing in various musicals and had an opportunity of a professional career in voice but discovered her love for teaching, which immediately fit with her love of children.
Catherine taught fifth grade in the Chicago, Ill., Catholic school system while her husband attended medical school at Loyola of Chicago. Later, they would return to Kingston, where she began teaching in the Kingston Borough public school system. She later became a full-time wife and mother of five children. She undertook the task of chauffeuring them all to school, school events and school sports, always immensely proud with a smile on her face and pure joy.
Catherine also had a deep devotion to the clergy, always helping in any way asked of her, forming strong friendships along the way. Catherine was actively involved with St. Ignatius Church, Kingston, where she would serve as a Eucharistic minister as well as a lector. She was a daily attendee of 12:10 p.m. Mass and enjoyed her fellow parishioners daily, talking and going for coffee and donuts on occasion.
For her, her greatest accomplishment were her children, and her main goal for them was to be a friend of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; brothers, Thomas Moran and his wife, Joan, and Joseph; and sister, Mary Boyle, and her husband, Phil.
She is survived by her son, William Jr., and his wife, Sandy, Swoyersville; son, Paul, and his wife, Denise, Tampa, Fla.; daughter, Katie, and her husband, Joe, Orlando, Fla.; daughter, Jane Smedley-Anzalone, and her husband, William, Shavertown; son, Anthony and his wife, Sheri, Downingtown; grandchildren, William and Charles Anzalone, Tony Smedley Jr. and Savannah Smedley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Maher-Collins Funeral Home, 360 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, and from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday in the church.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Ignatius Church, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston, PA 18704.

My sympathy to Catherine's family. Catherine was a very kind person to everyone she met. She spread her deep belief in God in a way that make everyone smile. Fond memories of our talks at St. Ignatius church where everyone there loved her. May she spend eternity in Heaven and receive her reward. She will be sadly missed and remembered.

Catherine was one of those few people one meets in life who had her priorities ordered well. God first, followed by family, then community. Her outreach to others as a Catholic who truly lived her faith will always be treasured. May God grant blessed repose and eternal memory to His servant, and may He, Who raised Lazarus and promised us eternal life, grant peace to the Smedley family.
