AVOCA — Edward Patrick Carlin, 84, of Avoca, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital, Wilkes-Barre. After years of suffering, God came to Ed on July 14, 2021, and said to him 'throw away that walker and come walk with me.' Born in the Pittston Junction May 29, 1937, and raised in West Avoca, he was the son of the late Michael and Ann (Mallarky) Carlin.

Ed was a member of Queen of The Apostles Church, Avoca. He graduated from Avoca High School in 1957, and served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1961, then worked at Swanee Paper (Plainwell) in Ransom, retiring in 1999 after 36 years of employment.

Ed loved gardening when he was able. Years ago, you would see Ed walking in the woods around his house, all over Avoca and Dupont, and fishing at Lake Winola and Frances Slocum State Park. Later when walking was a challenge, he loved watching and feeding the birds from his deck.

He loved to reminisce about "the good ole days," as well as talking to friends about sports and the news of the day over a beer at the VFW in Dupont or the West Side Social Club in Avoca. He also loved lottery scratchers — win or lose.

He and his wife, Rose, went on many polka trips together with their polka friends. Ed was a loving and devoted husband, dad, grandpa, friend and neighbor, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings: Bob, Ken, Marie, Betty, Shirly and Bill.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart, his wife of 63 years, Rosemarie (Panek) Carlin; his son, Edward Jr. and his wife Wendy, of Scranton, and his daughter, Patti Martini and her husband Louis, of Media, Delaware County. He was very proud of his two beautiful granddaughters: Casey Carlin, of Chicago, and Erin Carlin, of Scranton. He had many caring friends and was the best uncle anyone could have.

The family is very thankful for their wonderful and caring neighbors: Bob Bartosiecz and Dennis Owan, as well as all of their friends from the VFW in Dupont that provided support and love. They would also like to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses that cared for Ed at the Veterans Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to support homeless veterans: Use the eDonate option on the VA's website to donate online. Please specify you want the funds to be used to help Veterans who are homeless or at-risk.

To summarize, Ed always was and always will be "up street, downtown, top shelf!"

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 19, 2021, at Queen Of The Apostles Parish Church, 715 Hawthorne St., Avoca, with Fr. Phillip Sladicka officiating. Friends may call for visitation on Monday morning, July 19, from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. AMVETS honor guard of Greater Pittston will provide military honors.
