Elmer Varvaglione Obituary

Elmer Varvaglione, 85, of Plains Township, died Monday morning, Jan. 18, 2010, at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township. Born in Hazleton, he was a son of the late Angelo and Gerolama Varvaglione. Elmer was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving with the 29th Marines, 2nd Marine Division in the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre where he was awarded the Purple Heart for a wound he received in action on Nov. 3, 1944. He was employed as a machinist and was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plains; The Swoyersville American Legion, Post 644; the Italian American Veterans of Luzerne County, Post 1; the Disabled American Veterans and the National Rifle Association. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lynn; brothers, Anthony and Frank Varvaglione. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Anna Fronduti; daughters, Virginia Troupe, Winter Springs, Fla., and Cynthia Varvaglione, Pittston; granddaughters, Nicole Troupe Lemar, Adrienne Troupe Amos, Renee, Nina Brookfield and Julie Brookfield; seven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services with military honors and committal will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to The Italian American Veterans of Luzerne County, Post 1. Arrangements are by the Corcoran Funeral Home, 20 S. Main St. Plains.
