Even in this awful year of 2020, Frank Pineno stands tall and lives on like the classics that he orchestrated us to play. Only over time can we look back and know his genius and contributions to our lives. I love the picture displayed here. It's worth a1000 words many time over.

It is an honor to remember Mr. Pineno. My best times and friends at Selinsgrove High School were band and band members. He taught us to work, play, and, yes, march together. Uncle Frank was an example of kindness, possibilities, and excellence in all things worth doing. My thanks to his family for sharing him with all of us and the community; and I am grateful for the gift of music in my life and his teaching me to value and love it.

I cannot tell you how sad I am to hear about Uncle Frank's passing. Uncle Frank was a great man. He taught us how play our instruments and to be disciplined as band members but more importantly he taught us to be decent human beings. He loved us and we loved him, too. All of my fond memories of high school are of the band, football games, parades, concerts, jazz band, bus rides and of course, band trips. There was no one like him. He will always be remembered fondly by my siblings and me. Thank you dear Pineno Family for sharing Uncle Frank with us. My prayers are with you at this difficult time. God speed, Uncle Frank!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Pineno family. My father and I were both former students of Mr. Pineno. My dad a 1965 graduate and myself a 1989 grad. He was a memoriable part of my high school career and I will always remember his love and entheusiam for music. He taught me to love music and I hope to instill that same enjoyment in my boys. He was an inspiration to so many people he will be missed.

Thank you to all the kind people that have sent messages to our family. We were proud of our father and will miss him tremendously. Knowing how many admired him as we did is a comfort. We all had him as a teacher and were glad of it ---but as our dad---he was the best. Thanks to the many students who let him know how important he was in their lives---while he was living. My thoughts and prayers are with the Pineno family. Mr. Pineno was not only a wonderful teacher but a wonderful human being. He has touched so many lives and his presence on this earth will be greatly missed. I am a vocal music teacher in Columbus OH and proud to say I learned many of my instrumental abilities from Mr. Pineno. I tell my students all the time that being involved in musical groups will create life-long memories and that is exactly what Mr. Pineno did for me. His spirit will never be forgotten.

My sincere condolences to the entire Pineno family for your tremendous loss. Mr. Pineno was undoubtedly my most memorable and favorite teacher. Such an important person in my life! And although I owe my life-long knowledge and appreciation of music to him, I also learned countless other life lessons through his leadership, his dedication, and patience.
October 26, 2009
My husband and I were both students of Mr. Pineno. From the first day I met Mr. Pineno, he inspired me to not only play an instrument but to be the best person I could be. He gave me opportunities that I never would have had otherwise. I am so happy that my husband and youngest son were able to play for him and with him in the Sunbury City Band and Selinsgrove Adult band. My heartfelt sympathy to his wife and children. Thanks for sharing him with all of us. Marilyn, Barry and Jake Newman, Hummels Wharf, PA

My thoughts go our to you & your family as you celebrate the life of "Mr. P." Too many fond memories to list here -- made obvious by so many wonderful comments already shared. To say Mr. P. was a positive role model is an understatement! He taught, inspired, encouraged and led by example. Yes, we learned a LOT about music, but we truly learned more about being decent human beings and living a good life.

Please accept my condolences. Mr. Penino was a kind and gentle man. I will always remember him as the one teacher who gave me the self esteem and will power to better myself. We didn't just play the songs. We learned about the composers and different types of music. It was the best part of high school and I am so proud to have been a part of it.

When I think of Mr. Pineno I think of a gentleman, a truly dedicated teacher, an inspiring human being, and a person who this world could use many, many more of just like him! Mr. Pineno was such a positive role model on so many levels. As a teacher, he inspired, as a human being he modeled kindness, grace, compassion, and dedication to excellence, and as a family man he showed such loyalty and love! Mr. Pineno will be sorely missed by all of us so blessed to have known him. He was truly a gentle giant!!

Pineno Family,
Please accept my sympathy in your loss. Like so many have already expressed, I too have fond memories of my days with the SAHS band program. Frank had a way of bringing out the best in his students and certainly fostered my love for music. Even though I didn't pursue a career in music, I spent the past 20 years teaching many high school marching band programs and conitue as an adjudicator. His days at SAHS have influenced the lives of many and he will be missed!

Dear Mrs. Pineno and family:
Mr. P. will forever be a part of my family's history as he taught three of us how to play our instruments. He was always very encouraging, devoted, and tireless. I have the fondest memories of him, including the friendly battles between band members to sit behind him at football games because his pipe tobacco had the most wonderful aroma. The music of the Susquehanna Valley will forever be a bit flat, now that he is gone. He will be missed by countless many.

For those of us who had the privilege of learning and working with Mr. Pineno we say Thank You to the entire family for sharing him with all of us. He was a great man and has had a huge impact on my life and so many others. Was there really something more to high school besides band? It was the biggest part of high school for me and allowed me to continue enjoying and sharing music with others. The town of Selinsgrove and the school district should be proud to have the name of Mr. Francis L. Pineno be a part of it's history. I know that he has a group of Angels up above playing the John Philip Sousa March right now. God bless the family. Mr. P. I love you and will miss you forever.

Mrs. Pineno & Family,
My sincere condolences to you and your family on Frank's passing. I am the drummer with the Four Notes having replaced Froggy after he had to give up playing. You know, its not the duration of one's life that counts, but their donation. Frank gave of himself through the years with family and music being his life. He was a good man and I think of him from time to time when we are on a job. May the Lord help you through each day as you take one day at a time.
Sincerely,

I still remember the sweet smell of his black cherry tobacco from his pipe. I loved the way he loved the music he taught us. He was a great inspiration for anyone who wanted to pursue their musical ambitions. You inspired me to come out of my shell. When acne and braces made me feel so ugly, you helped me to see beyond and embrace the music. I will miss you and will carry the memories of band days in my heart forever.

Mrs Pineno & family,
"Uncle Frank" was one of my favorite teachers! I have so many fond memories of many football games, parades, and band trips with him. One of the funniest memories is when we were practicing our routine for the football game and I got the idea to jump a mud puddle and didn't quite make the other side and ended up in the mud. I will never forget Uncle Frank's reaction or the look on his face!! He touched my life in so many ways and will be greatly missed. Uncle Frank's passing truly is the end to a legacy! I will miss him greatly! My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Mister Pineno was a favorite teacher for many of us. How sad we are to learn of his passing. Football games were the greatest fun for the band gang and from what I see, the class of '77 wasn't alone in that belief. He made us work, but we loved it. Mr. P, you will be missed. Words alone cannot express my sadness at the loss of Mr. Pineno. He began to instill a love of instrumental music in me when I was in the fourth grade, and he taught me to play the french horn when the instrument was bigger than I! From those inauspicious beginnings, Mr. Pineno taught me and coached me and expected me to give my best, until I performed a high-school-career-capping solo during my senior year. My memories of high school band are my best memories of high school, and a lot of that is due to "Uncle Frank". He taught his students to work as a team, and he helped us to discover the self-discipline to really excel at music, if that is what we wanted. I can still hear his voice through his bullhorn as he tried to keep us in step, and whenever I catch a whiff of pipe tobacco that smells like his, I am instantly transported back to Uncle Frank's office. It is my sincere hope that it will comfort his family to know that he was loved by so many. He lives on in our hearts. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Frank was an unbelievable band/music teacher. He was loved & adored by many of his students. Being a family friend made it a bit easier when he scolded me for not practicing my drums. I watched & listened to him play with my dad (Froggy Fritz) in the Four Notes. He will be missed tremendously. Sympathies from the Fritz family to the entire Pineno family.

Mr. Pineno "Uncle Frank" will be missed from me and my wife cause he was a great band director that I had while I was in high school that gave me a chance even if I was awful playing the instrument that I played and he was a great friend and neighbor.
Our prayers will be with his wife and his family.

I was a student touched by Mr. Pineno many years ago. He has a place in my heart and my music which has lasted forever! This past year I was so fortunate to receive a CD of a band concert when I attended Selinsgrove Area HS in 1962 - 1967 when I played an oboe solo and my cousin played a piano concerto. The sound of his music will play on alive as ever..... Thank you to the family for sharing him.

May God comfort your family... I became 1st Clarinetist in the instrumental music program (Class of '58) under Frank's teaching at Selinsgrove; and became a music educator myself in '62. We would often joke about our July 16th birthdays...

I have thought fondly of "Uncle Frank" over the many years since I was in the band. I remember his persistence and patience in teaching us to make harmonious sounds; it paid off. He was always insistent that Selinsgrove Band sound like a "band" and not a Drum and Bugle Corps, and again, he was successful. Who else but Uncle Frank could pull off trips to New York City with kids of ages from 14 to 18? (Those times in the Piccadilly Hotel were priceless--especially the elevators that stopped 6" above or below the floors!). He didn't lose any of us, and we all came back in one piece.
Even though it's been over 35 years since I was in high school, I would run into him from time to time; he always remembered me (that could be bad or good!), and he always had glowing reports of the successes of his children--he was very proud of all of you. In this time of loss, remember this--he made a profound impact on thousands of young people, instilling in us a love of music, as well as portraying an excellent role model of a loving family man. Each of you has a part of him living in you; nourish it.

What a dear, dear man! "Uncle Frank" was my band director ('64-69) and neighbor. I remember delivering newspapers on 9th street, so often hearing music (often piano) issue from the Pineno household. I can't think of a soul who gave more to the school and the community.

I have many great memories of Mr P. I first had music lessons with him in 5th grade at Jackson Penn. I grew to appreciate his wisdom, patience, and dedication to music and especially all of his students. Even though we complained about marching all around Selinsgrove during class and spending so many summer days praticing routines on the football field he gave us all a reason to be proud of ourselves. Thank you Pineno family for sharing this wonderful man with so many people. SAHS '84

Mr. Pineno was my band instructor 1953-1958; he made me feel that I could play that oboe and instilled a love of band music in all of us. I am so glad he attended our 50th reunion last year;I shall miss him terribly; God's Blessing to his family.

What a wonderful person he was. I was in the Selinsgrove High School band from about 1978 to 1981. I didn't fully appreciate Mr. Pineno at the time, but I realize now that he was extraordinarily patient with beginning musicians, and with teenage behavior in general. I think he managed to share his love of music with all of us, even those who were mostly interested in band as a social activity. My sympathy to his family -- you must miss him very much.

To the Pineno family,
"Uncle Frank" as most of us so fondly called him. Touched me in his compassion and love for us band students as individuals. He took time out always when we needed someone and he was someone I admired a whole lot as a student and also as an adult. Even after retiring he took time out if he saw you to talk and to see how you were doing. He was a great man and will be missed immensely in Adult band. God bless you in your time of loss.

While having lunch with some high school friends this past summer, Mr. Pineno entered the restaurant just as I had mentioned his name as my favorite teacher from high school. What a delight to be able to speak to him! He asked me if I still play my clarinet. I graduated in 1963 and he remembered! Because of him, I had many opportunities that would not have been available to me otherwise. He was so devoted to his students, getting the best from each of us, making us feel so special--a gift everyone needs and especially as an adolescent. We worked very hard to perform at football games, parades, and concerts. He even worked with us during the summer months! Your loss is great and my heart goes out to his entire family. May your memories sustain you during this most difficult time.

BAND was one of the best courses offered at Selinsgrove High School. And that's because Mr. Pineno made the Selinsgrove Marching Band world famous - or at least we thought we were famous. We made records of our music, performed elaborate marching routines, participated in regional and state events and had a ton of fun. He challenged and changed our lives forever. All the best to the Pineno family.
