EDWARDSVILLE — George J. Goode, Jr., 76, of Edwardsville, passed into eternal rest March 1, 2023, after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late George Goode, Sr. and Lillian Antoinette (Oberst) Goode. George was born on Dec. 3, 1946, in Edwardsville, where he lived his entire life. He graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1964. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Kings College in 1968, and was proud to obtain several Master's Degrees from UCLA.
After graduating from Kings College, he taught at Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre for over 35 years. He was a caring teacher, mentor and friend to his students and other faculty members, who became his close and trusted friends. He established the Spanish club at Meyers, and traveled to many Spanish speaking countries with various clubs and groups.
After his Dad passed away in 1976, he devoted his life to caring for his mother and coaching football, first at Meyers and then at GAR. He was an avid weightlifter, and was a regularly active runner.
George always gave freely of his time both as a coach and to help friends and family, he expected nothing in return. Even as a teenager he could always be depended on to help at his grandparents house with yard work and projects. He volunteered as a coach, and refused any pay. George had an enthusiastic sense of humor, was a great storyteller, and enjoyed a good ruse. While he enjoyed coaching at GAR, he always felt Meyers was his home and loved his students there.
George was deeply religious and generous, especially to his church, and could often be found helping prepare thousands of pierogies and halushki as fund raisers for both St. Anthony Parish, and then St. John the Baptist Parish in Larksville, to support programs at the church.
Once he retired from teaching, he found his niche attending daily Mass or the Rosary at Misericordia, and helping with the charity "Dinners for Kids," as a driver to deliver meals to disadvantaged children several times a week. He attended high school basketball and football games, and loved to go to Yankees games both in New York and locally at the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
He is survived by his cousins: Antoinette, Sylvia, Janet, Janice, Terry; their families, and many close friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 11, with a visitation for family and friends at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, 125 Nesbitt St, Larksville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by the Rev. Gerald Gurka at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be at St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Edwardsville.
In lieu of flowers, donations in honor of George can be made to "Dinners for Kids" at Dinnersforkids.org, or "Dinners for Kids," 84 S. Wyoming Ave., Edwardsville, PA 18704, 570-262-7839.

I am so sorry for Mr.Goode's family's loss. He was a wonderful person. He was my Spanish teacher at Meyers. He was always standing out in the hall, waiting for us all to get in and start speaking Spanish! I would always walk toward him, calling him "Mr. Bueno," and he would laugh. He was always smiling. I don't think he had a mean bone in his body. Rest well, mi amigo

Mr. Goode was a kind and caring man, and his enthusiasm for teaching made Spanish class fun. My condolences to his family and friends, as I know he will be greatly missed. He was my Spanish teacher for three years and my homeroom teacher Sr. year, so I have lots of fond memories of room 309, and of Mr. Goode holding court in the hallway at MHS in between classes. He made this world a better place, we were lucky to know him.

Class of 1974, and so many of my great memories from high school included George Goode. I had him for 4 years Spanish and no one could ask for a better educator, coach, personal cheerleader and friend. He genuinely loved his students as extended family. Attended even personal events for his students and always kept in touch through the tears. A devout man who lived his life as a role model. Changed lives his entire life and was always a very humble man. My brother, Dr Jerry W Goss (class of 1976) and I will miss him immensely. Thank you for being such an amazing mentor.

Mr. Goode was my Spanish II teacher. He made both listening to and speaking the language a joy. (I only wish I had paid more attention, since now I work as a nurse caring for a mostly Hispanic work force!) Thank you Mr. Goode for being an amazing teacher and also for being an all around good and decent human being. May you rest in heavenly peace.

What a sad day to read this news about Mr. Goode. I was so fortunate to be a student in his Spanish classes. I have fond memories of him standing out on front of room 309 at Meyers High School. He was always in such a happy upbeat mood and one of my favorite teachers. I felt so proud to come back to Myers one day after college and tell him that I was also a teacher. The last time I saw him was for our 20th year reunion, class of '86. We met at the school with our families and children to get a tour of Meyers and reminisce about the good old days! Even after 20 years he remembered all of our names and some of the funny things that happened when we were in high school. Prayers for his family and Friends in the Edwardsville Wilkes-Barre area.

Though I never had Mr. Goode as a teacher, he was well loved by my older siblings who had him for Spanish at MHS, as well as our whole family, who thought the world of him. As a student at MHS, I worked with Mr. Goode on various school events and activities. He was class act, upbeat and kind, a gentleman, and cared deeply about all of his own students - and students in general at MHS. He enjoyed sharing his love of Spanish, linguistics, and appreciation for travel and experiencing other cultures. He was also a man of deep faith and took a genuine interest in helping others, whenever possible.
Thank you for being the wonderful human being that you were and for your positive impact on so many, in this life!

I grew up with George. He always had a nick name for everyone of his friends. Plus you would see George on the corner by Sapol's store every day around 3pm. You see he delivered papers. If I remember George's nick name was guppy. He sure was a nice guy. I admired George. It is sad to see him gone. No one can take his place. RIP George.
