PAXINOS — George Zelnick, 94, of Paxinos, passed away peacefully Friday, Feb. 12, 2021, at Grandview Nursing Home, Danville, after a short illness.
He was born Sept. 17, 1926, in Plymouth, a son of Frank and Ella (Mech) Zelnick. He was the youngest of nine children and when he was three-months-old, his father died in a coal mine accident. As part of such a large family, he had many stories of the antics he and his siblings got up to in their childhoods.
On June 7, 1958, in Plymouth, he married the former Ellen Green, who survives.
George was a graduate of Plymouth High School. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served in Italy during World War II, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant
George graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, Hershey, in 1956 and served as a state trooper in Troop F for 30 years, mainly at the Shamokin and Stonington stations as a criminal investigator. After retirement from the state police, he was employed as director of corporate security for Weis Markets Inc.
He loved his vegetable garden and was famous for his tomatoes — grown from seeds he brought back from Europe during WWII. In retirement, he continued gardening, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
George was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Pennsylvania State Troopers Association and VFW.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, George is survived by a daughter, Carolyn R. Wolfe Ph.D. and husband, William, of Paxinos, a son, Alan and wife, Tammy, of Sunbury, and a son, George, of Enola; his grandchildren, Emily Wolfe, Leslie Wolfe, Miranda Zelnick and Andrew Zelnick, several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Anne Alexander, Mary Zelnick, Julia Makarczyk and Ellen Jula, his brothers, Frank, Michael, Stephen and John and their spouses.
A military funeral will be held with Pennsylvania State Police honor guard. Arrangements are by Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, Sunbury.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to honor George's memory can be made of the Pennsylvania State Police Historical Educational and Memorial Center, 187 Police Academy Drive, Hershey, PA 17033, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.
