WILKES-BARRE TWP. — Helen E. Grula, 90, of Wilkes-Barre Township, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at the Golden Living Center-Summit in Wilkes-Barre.
She was born in Lopez on July 29, 1923, a daughter of the late John and Anna Michalow Vasickanin. Helen was a member of St. Joseph's Monastery in Wilkes-Barre Township for many years, prior to its closing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Grula, in 1991, and by her grandson, Jonathan Grula, in 1999. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, John and Joseph Vasickanin; and Andrew, George and Peter Washington; sisters, Anna Koval, Peggy McArdle and Mary Soltis.
Surviving are her sons, Gregory J. Grula, Brookfield, Mass.; Robert J. Grula and his wife, Karen, Wilkes-Barre Township; Richard A. Grula, North Wales, Pa.; daughter, Janet Pacovsky and her husband, Barry, Kingston; grandchildren, Justin Pacovsky, Jersey City, N.J., and Russell Pacovsky, Kingston; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 9:30 a.m. in St. Andrew's Parish, 316 Parish St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Dallas. Friends may call 8 to 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jonathan Grula Foundation, c/o 18 Charles St., Ashley, PA 18706.
