Janet Cross Obituary

SWEET VALLEY — Janet Fila Cross, 77, of Sweet Valley, passed away peacefully on Dec. 5, 2024, after more than a decade of bravely fighting cancer.

She was born on Jan. 2, 1947, in Edwardsville to Alexander and Eva Fila, who preceded her in death.

On April 10, 1966, Janet married the love of her life, Ronald Cross, with whom she shared 58 years of love, laughter and a life well-lived. Together they raised a family built on a foundation of mutual respect and devotion. Janet and Ronald spent their summers in Sweet Valley, where they made their home, and spent the winter months in St. Augustine, Florida, for decades. This bi-coastal life was a source of joy and inspiration for Janet, and she cherished both locations deeply.

Janet was an immensely talented artist, known for her beautiful paintings and stunning photography. Her work captured the world with a unique perspective, showcasing her creative vision and deep appreciation for the beauty around her. Over the years, Janet won numerous awards for her photography, gaining recognition for her ability to tell a story through the lens of her camera. Her artwork was more than just an expression of creativity, it was a testament to her keen eye, her passion for detail and her ability to evoke emotion through her art.

She had a special place in her heart for the New England states. She and Ronald looked forward to attending the Pumpkin Festival and Lobster Fest each year, where they embraced the beauty and charm of the region and enjoyed the festivities with friends and family. These cherished traditions added to the many memories Janet made throughout her life, which she carried with her in spirit wherever she went.

One of Janet's greatest joys in life was attending the events of her grandchildren. Whether it was a school performance, sporting event, or family gathering, Janet was always there with a smile and an outpouring of pride. She was incredibly proud of each and every one one of her grandchildren and found immense joy in supporting them in all their endeavors. Her love for them was boundless, and they were a constant source of happiness and inspiration for her.

Janet also loved holiday and birthday gatherings, and she had an extraordinary talent for decorating her home for every season. From vibrant autumn displays to festive Christmas trees, her ability to transform her space with thoughtful, creative touches was spectacular. These celebrations were always made brighter by Janet's attention to detail and her love for bringing people together. Her home was a place where family and friends could enjoy the warmth of her hospitality and the joy of being together.

For over a decade, Janet fought a courageous battle with cancer, facing each challenge with remarkable strength, grace and determination. Her ability to persevere, even in the face of adversity, was a testament to her inner strength and unwavering love for her family. Janet's journey was one of resilience, and she remained a source of inspiration to all who knew her.

Janet is survived by her beloved husband, Ronald Cross; her children: Ron Cross, Jr. and his wife Sherry, of Sweet Valley; Cheri (Cross) Horan and her husband Stephen, of Sweet Valley; Holly (Cross) O'Connell and her husband Attorney Patrick O'Connell, of Bloomsburg; and Jennifer (Cross) Richardson, of Dallas; as well as her cherished grandchildren: Hannah Cross, of St. Croix; Mason Cross, of Sweet Valley; PJ O'Connell, of Bloomsburg; Samantha Horan, of Sweet Valley; Baylee O'Connell, of Bloomsburg; Luke Richardson, of Dallas; and Owen Richardson, of Dallas; she is also survived by many extended family members and friends.

A private ceremony will be held for immediate family members, and Janet will be cremated according to her wishes.

Arrangements are by Curtis L. Swanson Funeral Home, Inc., corners of routes 29 and 118, Pikes Creek.

Dad, Ronnie, Cheri, Hol, and Jenny,
You are all in my constant thoughts and prayers. I thought of your Mom as my second Mom. She always knew what to do and say to make my tough days turn happy. Both of our Moms were dealt a horrible hand right when it was the time in their lives that they were to stop working and do anything they wanted. They both fought like hell though to stay with us as long as they could. I don´t get why God does this to the best people on Earth. I know there´s nothing anyone can say to you right now to make you feel better. It definitely takes time before anything seems at all normal again. I´m here for you if you need someone to talk to. I love you all, Pam Kantor
