Lawrence E. Winans Jr., 92, of Shickshinny, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, in the VA Medical Center, Plains Township.
Born Dec. 1, 1920 in McKendree, he was a son of the late Lawrence Edmund and Mary Ellen (Wandell) Winans Sr.
He was a graduate of the former Shickshinny High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at the former Martini Silk Mill and retired from the former Luzerne Outerwear. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church, Shickshinny, where he faithfully served the Lord in teaching and church visitation.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Jane E. Phillips, who died Oct. 19, 2008.
Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Jane Freeman and her husband, Van, Apex, N.C.; Betsy L. Derby and her husband, Andress, Shickshinny Valley; and Cindy E. Crane and her husband, Neil, Berwick; a brother, Donald Winans, Ohio; twin sisters, Grace and Ada Winans, Berwick; grandchildren, Candy Wall, Andy Lee Derby, Van Ray Freeman, Tricia Milligan, Laurie Kishbaugh, Darrell Crane and Heath Crane; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the Bible Baptist Church, Shickshinny. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Shickshinny. Visitation will be Friday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mayo Funeral Home Inc., Shickshinny.
