Lisa Urbanski Obituary

Lisa Marie Urbanski, 57, of Wapwallopen, passed into the loving arms of the Angels on Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at Allied Services Hospice Wilkes Barre.

She was born in Wilkes Barre on June 11, 1968, the daughter of George Platko Sr. and the late Caroline (Ebert) Platko.

Lisa was a member of the graduating Class of 1986 of the former Bishop Hoban High School, Wilkes Barre. She also attended Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke. She was employed as a phlebotomist at numerous facilities, lastly at Allied Services Wilkes Barre Rehab. Lisa's life was defined by her love for family, friendship and community. She found joy in simple traditions like pierogi making before holidays alongside her mother and family, her annual Christmas parties and cherished special outings with her son and husband to Hershey and Cape May. Lisa's son was the heart of her world and her devotion to him inspired her commitment to the Special Needs community, which, in 2016, Lisa co-founded Brighter Journeys, a nonprofit foundation serving the surrounding community. Lisa was chosen by Nextar Media Group, 28/22 NEPA in 2025 as Remarkable Woman of the Year.

Lisa was deeply religious and a member of St. Leo the Great Parish, Ashley.

Preceding her in death was her mother, Caroline Platko, in 2022.

Surviving are her loving husband of 20 years, Steven J. Urbanski; son, Joseph Urbanski; father, George Platko Sr.; brother, George J. Platko (JoAnn); sister, Catherine Palicki (James); three nieces, Amanda Lavan (Ross), Alyssa Mason (Jordon) and Rachel Platko and fiancé Brandon Brueckner; and great-niece, Elliette Rae Lavan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Leo the Great Parish, 33 Manhattan St., Ashley, with the Rev. Andrew McCarroll officiating. A visitation will be at the church at 10 a.m. to service time. Private interment will be at the convenience of the family in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Twp. Funeral arrangements are by George A Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Allied Services Hospice Center and her loving and caring husband for their excellent care and compassion given to Lisa in her time of need.

To honor Lisa, donations can be made to Brighter Journeys, 150 Mundy St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 18702.

Sometimes, a person's light is so bright it never truly goes out. For all of us who knew and loved Lisa, that light will shine forever. Her journey was guided by a profound and selfless love for her own son, which taught her that our truest legacy isn't what we overcome, but what we give to others. Even as she fought her own health battles with incredible grace, her gaze was always fixed on the faces of the children she helped, finding her own strength in their smiles. Though she is no longer with us, the warmth she shared lives on. Her boundless heart touched thousands of families, leaving their lives a little brighter because of her unwavering dedication. She showed us all that the most precious reward in life is a child´s simple, happy grin, and that together, we can build a village of love that holds everyone up. For the person she was-her selfless spirit, her unstoppable energy, and her extraordinary heart-we will always be so grateful.
