Mabel Connell Obituary
Mabel L. Connell, of West Pittston, passed away Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, in East Mountain Manor.
Born in Old Forge on January 17, 1909, she was the youngest of ten children of the late John and Elizabeth Tooley Lynch.
She was a graduate of East Stroudsburg State College and a teacher of mathematics at Old Forge Junior High School. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church.
Mabel was a veteran of more than 40 years of service to various health care and hospital auxiliary services and was an integral part of N.P.W. Medical Center (now Geisinger Wyoming Valley) through its formation. She served as a board member of the hospital from 1976 to 1983 and a 40-year member and past president of the Pittston Hospital Auxiliary; the first female member of Pittston Hospital Board of Directors; former president of the Visiting Nurse Association, now a part of Home Health Services, Wyoming Valley; member of the Women’s Club of West Pittston; member of the Westmoreland Club, Wilkes-Barre. and Fox Hill Country Club; and the first woman president of the Pocono Manor Cottage League. Mabel especially enjoyed her bridge-playing days at Fox Hill.
Preceding her in death were her husband, John G. Connell; son John G. Connell Jr.; grandson John G. Connell III; sisters Helen Collier and Sarah Burns; brothers Thomas, John, Frank, Walter, Ralph, Joseph and Leonard.
She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Suzanne Miller, West Pittston; granddaughter, Colby Connell Balazs, Boston, MA; several nieces and nephews, whom she was also very kind to.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at 11 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, Pittston. The family will receive friends and family in the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. There will be no viewing. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Donations in Mrs. Connell’s name may be made to St. John the Evangelist Youth Ministry Fund, 35 William St., Pittston, PA. Services entrusted to the Peter J. Adonizio Funeral Home, 802 Susquehanna Ave., West Pittston.
