EDWARDSVILLE — Michael T. Lloyd, 69, of Edwardsville, passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 18, 2021.
Born Aug. 8, 1952, in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late Harry R. and Mildred Rose Lloyd.
Michael was a graduate of Saint Nicholas High School, earned his BA from King's College, and continued his education to earn a master's degree.
Michael was a German language teacher at James M. Coughlin High School for 35 years before retiring. As German Club advisor, he arranged many student trips to enjoy Broadway shows and tour various sites of interest in New York City. He hosted several German-speaking foreign exchange students through the years.
Michael traveled extensively and took many students to Europe as coordinator for foreign travel while teaching, and continued touring with adults after retiring. He had an absolute love for and extensive knowledge of classic films.
Michael was a very active member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and Wilkes-Barre Area Education Association. He served as Vice President, as a member of the Grievance Committee, and was involved in contract negotiations for many years. In his retirement, he remained active as a retirement advisor to other teachers.
His sister, Katie McGuire, and sister-in-law, Lenore Hando Lloyd, preceded him in death.
His siblings, David, of Kingston, and Richard, of New Jersey; Millie Lloyd and Ellen Q. Bush, of Florida; nieces, nephews, other family, and friends will miss him very much.
Celebration of Michael's Life begins Thursday with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. at McLaughlin's, 142 S. Washington St. in Wilkes-Barre, and continues there on Friday with gathering at 11 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at noon in the Church of Saint Nicholas.

Deepest sympathy to your family. Herr Lloyd was one of the best teachers I had at Coughlin. I was lucky to travel with him and the German club in 1996, and still remember the trip fondly. He will be missed, the world has lost a special light.

Kids at Coughlin took German specifically because of Herr Lloyd's reputation as a wonderful, kind, caring teacher. His compassion extended to kids who weren't even in his classes: German Club had many kids who didn't even take German as a class, just because we wanted to be around him. He was that special and everyone knew it. How lucky we were to have been influenced by such a great man.

My deepest condolences to the family. Herr Lloyd was my high school German teacher many years ago & he remains one of my favorites. He also chaperoned our group trip abroad, which was my first exposure to much of anything beyond the Wyoming Valley. That trip inspired my love of travel & fondness for Austria, Germany & Switzerland that exists to this day. Thank you, Herr Lloyd, for your years of dedication to your profession, your ability to make learning fun, & your positive impact on the lives of many more students than you probably realized.

Herr Lloyd was, without question, simply the best teacher I have ever had.
I have 4 years of very fond memories of his classes that have left a lifetime's worth of impressions on me. He was a kind man who touched the souls of those he taught, and I will miss him very deeply.
Rest well, Herr Lloyd.
