NANTICOKE — Peter Slota, 94, of the Hanover section of Nanticoke, passed away June 12, 2018, at his residence in Forest Hill, Md.
Born June 20, 1923, Peter was the son of the late Nathaniel and Catherine (Fujok) Slota. Peter lived most of his life in the Hanover section of Nanticoke, where he graduated high school. His primary career was being a salesman for the Tasty Baking Company and he serviced regions in Northeast Pennsylvania for over three decades. He was a devoted member of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church: over his life he held many roles in building a strong parish community. Peter served his country in WWII in the U.S. Army and also his Hanover community as a volunteer fireman, honorary member of the Nanticoke Conservation Club and as an active member of his community crime watch. Peter was a thoughtful and caring neighbor who helped many people, especially in their times of need. His small vegetable garden was the envy of the neighborhood and he enjoyed hiking into the hills just outside his home to enjoy the views and occasionally pick mushrooms. His children and grandchildren will remember his ongoing projects in the back garage workshop and our many years of infamous pitch card games with the family card shark!
Peter was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Pauline Slota. Surviving are daughters Jane Wetzel and her husband, Charles, and Marie Duncan and her husband, Bruce; sons Peter Slota Jr. and his wife, Marla, Myron Slota and his wife, Karin, and John Slota and his wife, Lynn; sister Helen Lipowski; and 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from Stanley S. Stegura Funeral Home Inc., 614 S. Hanover St., Nanticoke. A Mass of Divine Liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, Hanover section of Nanticoke, with the Rev. Paul Wolensky presiding. Interment will be in the parish cemetery, Nanticoke. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Rev. Paul Wolensky will conduct Panaklyda services at 4 p.m.
