Richard Holodick Obituary

Richard Holodick, a beloved father, grandfather, educator, electrician, photographer and storyteller, passed away peacefully on Sept. 26, 2025, at the age of 88.

Born Aug. 26, 1937, Richard lived a vibrant life marked by a passion for learning, creating, traveling and uplifting those around him.

A proud alumnus of Penn State University and Colorado State University, Richard earned his Ph.D. in education, a testament to his lifelong commitment to knowledge. His early years were spent in Pennsylvania, where he had four sons — Michael, John, Richard and Charles — and later welcomed a daughter, Nichol, and his youngest son, Robert, in Oklahoma. His journey took him through Pennsylvania, Illinois, Colorado and Oklahoma, each place enriched by his boundless curiosity and dedication to the community. An avid photographer, Richard captured the beauty of his travels and life's moments through his cherished cameras, a constant companion. He also loved music, playing the piano and accordion for the family.

Richard's career was as diverse as his travels. He began as a photographer for the local paper, an EMS driver and a basketball coach, bringing energy and mentorship to young athletes. For 11 years, he worked as a skilled electrician in the Wilkes-Barre area, wiring homes and buildings with precision and expertise. Later, inspired to give back, he returned to academia, becoming a program director who championed the success of younger generations. His love for education was not just a profession but a mission that touched countless lives by guiding students toward fulfilling careers.

Richard was deeply committed to Save Our Schools (SOS), a cause he pursued with unwavering passion. He devoted his time, writings, and decades of experience to fight fraud and corruption in the local education system, tirelessly advocating for the future of Wilkes-Barre's schools. His dedication to this mission reflected his belief in the power of education to transform lives.

In retirement, Richard never slowed down. He continued electrical work alongside his youngest son, Robert, passing down his expertise with pride. For over 18 years, they completed countless jobs together. Known as the "Lamp Doctor," he found joy in crafting unique lamps from found objects, each piece reflecting his creative spirit. He also worked part-time at his cousin Mary's hearing aid business, where he shared laughter and stories with Mary, her husband Jody, and their beloved dog, who brought him endless delight.

No conversation with Richard was complete without him sharing his immense pride in his daughter, Nichol. He cherished visiting her in Michigan, where he would beam with joy discussing her work in the science field. His enthusiasm for her accomplishments was truly contagious, embodying the deep love he had for all his family and their achievements. His love for his family was a constant source of joy and pride in his life.

As a devoted grandfather to 10 grandchildren, Richard cherished a special bond with Sofia and Norah Holodick, who affectionately called him "Pop." He traveled tirelessly to support them at dance, jiujitsu and wrestling events, beaming with pride. Richard celebrated their achievements by creating heartfelt posters, cards and custom lamps to commemorate their milestones, each crafted with his signature creativity and love.

A well-traveled man with a gift for humor, Richard had an infectious ability to make people smile. Whether recounting his tales at the front desk or sharing his adventures across the country, he left a legacy of warmth, wisdom and wit. His humor and laughter were a constant source of joy for those around him, leaving behind a legacy of happiness and warmth.

Richard is survived by his two brothers, Michael and Nicholas; his children, Richard, Michael, Charles, John, Nichol and Robert; his 10 grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends. His memory will live on in the countless lives he touched with his generosity, laughter, lamps and education.

A celebration of Richard's life will take place Saturday, Oct. 4, at McLaughlin's, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre. Vistation begins at 4 p.m. and concludes with a prayer service and time for sharing at 6:30 p.m.
