MOUNTAIN TOP — Steven R. Tokach, Sr., 75 of Mountain Top, unexpectedly passed away at home on Friday, May 20, 2022.
Steve was born on Dec. 30, 1946, in Wilkes-Barre, to the late Stephen and Marion Horos Tokach.
Raised in the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre, Steve never ventured far away. He graduated from G.A.R. Memorial High School and then King's College. After earning his B.S. degree in accounting in 1968, he became a commissioned bank examiner, where he worked out of the Wilkes-Barre duty station. After 13 years, he left the bank examiners to join the executive team at the First Bank of Jermyn as a Vice-President. His career in community banking grew from there. He went on to serve as the Vice-President of Guaranty Bank NA of Shamokin and First Eastern Bank, Wilkes-Barre. He was then named as the Executive Vice-President/COO of The First National Bank of Jermyn/First Liberty Bank and onto President of First Liberty Bank. Finally, he served as the Regional President of First Liberty Bank, a division of Community Bank.
During this time, Steve served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Scranton Chamber of Commerce and of United One Credit Bureau, a member of the Red Cross (Scranton), WVCC, and participated in numerous charities and their functions.
Then he retired and played lots of golf. But retirement didn't suit him, and he began to look for something important and challenging to do. In November 2011, he found it. Steve was appointed President and CEO of FNCB and a member of the Board of Directors of FNCB and First National Community Bancorp, Inc. where he served with distinction for four years. He provided leadership and expertise to the Board of Directors and Executive Management during a period of great challenge for the bank.
After nearly 48 years, he finally returned to retirement, again, to enjoy his family and his favorite pastime of golf.
Steve will be greatly missed not only by his family of whom he was fiercely protective and proud of but also by his golf buddies. Those who knew him know how smart, logical and loyal a man he was with a quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor. The stories told at the 19th hole would always contain Steve's well-placed jabs and humor. His family takes comfort in knowing those legendary tales will live on.
Steve leaves behind his wife of more than 53 years, Mary Ann, his children Kimberly and husband Joseph Gibbons III, Plains; Steven and wife Tammy, Mountain Top; and James Tokach and wife Sarah, Tucson, Ariz.; and his grandchildren Emily Liberaski, Orlando, Fla.; Steven and Tyler Tokach, Mountain Top; and Samantha Yeninas, Courtdale.
Steve's family would like to thank everyone who has reached out with their love and support during this very difficult time.
A Celebration of Steve's Life is being planned for a later date, to be determined.
There will be no services at this time.
Arrangements are by Mamary-Durkin Funeral & Cremation Services, 59 Parrish St. Wilkes-Barre.
