Thomas MacFarland Obituary

KINGSTON — Thomas J. MacFarland Jr., 61, of Kingston, passed away peacefully on Jan. 15, 2025.

Born Sept. 12, 1963, he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Mary Louise Mulligan MacFarland. Tommy grew up in Park Place, graduated from Bishop O'Reilly High School, and attended King's College. He worked for Ingersoll Rand in Pennsylvania, and briefly in Roanoke, Virginia. He specialized in various divisions of sales within construction and mining.

He was an avid tennis player, and if you paired up with Tom, you were guaranteed to win! He also loved golfing and enjoyed playing every chance he had. He was a Fox Hill Country Club member and played every course in the area. Tom also loved Glen Summit, his second home, where he spent many summers with his family and cousins, as he called it, "up the mountain."

He was a genuine, stubborn Irishman with a fantastic sense of humor. He loved Notre Dame football and the Minnesota Vikings. He loved Jimmy Buffet and a special margarita known as the "Jimarita." He loved horse racing and spending time at Marion Farms, where he would visit Uncle Bill and Aunt Eileen Mulligan. Tom may have been an only child, but he had more friends who were like family — and all his cousins. That's one lucky guy!

Several years ago, when Tom was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune disease, CIDP, it slowed him down but never stopped him from anything. He approached most obstacles with humor, sarcasm, and a smile. He lived life to the fullest, on his terms, in what we fondly called "Tommy Time."

Tom's entire family is grateful for the care provided by health care professionals at Allied Meade Street in Wilkes-Barre, where he spent the last few weeks.

Celebration of Tom's Life begins Friday, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin's, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre. It continues there with a gathering at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, Kingston. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Donations to the American Red Cross or the Parish of St. Ignatius Loyola are preferred and will honor Tom's memory.

Tommy was a good guy. Very sad to hear of his passing. We were pretty good friends years ago and played lots of tennis together at Kirby Park & up at Glenn Summit on the clay courts which we loved to play on. Tommy had amazing touch with a racket and used to drive me crazy with his drop shot (& usually followed by a deep lob afterwards). We both liked the Vikings. His mom & dad were both great & fun people and avid tennis players themselves. Lots of great memories. Prayers for Tommy & condolences as well to his family & friends. Cheers to a good guy, a great family of terrific Irishmen, and fond memories! I'll raise a glass in your honor.

I was shocked to hear of his passing as i just found out. I hadn't been in touch with him recently. His father was one of my closest friends and I saw lots of Tommy as he was growing up. Our sincere condolences to the entire family.

Tommy, thank you for the lifetime of memories-mostly laughs, tennis, "ice," and cookouts. You and your mom were the heart of our Mulligan reunions, and though they will never be the same, we will continue to gather in your memories

Tommy was great fun and contributed in so many ways to the success of our family reunions over the years, including as tennis competitor and grill master extraordinaire! Very sorry to lose him so young.

This picture was taken the day the Susquehanna River was reaching a level that necessitated evacuation of some areas on the west side. The boys from Park Place took it in stride and gathered for a brew.

My condolences to Tommy´s family and friends. He´s an old friend of mine from high school. I think he truly was the best part of my high school years. I´m sure you all know that it was never boring with Tommy.
We crossed paths many times in the past decades, including last year when he explained what was happening to him. Crutches and a big smile. Only Tommy.

May good memories and love help you through this difficult time.
