Thomas Nauss Obituary

Thomas J. Nauss, M.D., 96, formerly of Spring Brook Township, died Dec. 18, 2014.

Born Feb. 20, 1918, in Plymouth, he was a son of the late Henry and Catherine Molyneux Nauss.

A 1936 graduate of Meyers High School, Dr. Nauss earned his baccalaureate degree from Penn State University and his doctorate in medicine from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Nauss completed his internship at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where he met and later married his beloved wife, the former Mary Jones of Old Forge. After their wedding on March 2, 1946, they relocated to Houston where Dr. Nauss was stationed with the U.S. Army. While in Houston, he was introduced to plastic and reconstructive surgery, beginning a passion for the field.

Returning to this area, Dr. Nauss opened a cleft palate clinic in Scranton to offer comprehensive patient services otherwise only available in large cities.

Dr. Nauss was the first board certified plastic surgeon in Northeastern Pennsylvania and travelled extensively, lecturing on the benefits of plastic surgery and its techniques. His practice maintained offices in Wilkes-Barre and Scranton for nearly 40 years at the time of his retirement.

A brother, Joseph Nauss; and sisters, Mary Mesharer and Claire Stock, preceded him in death.

He has been and will continue to be greatly missed by his wife, Mary; sister, Kathleen and her husband, James J. Burke, Moorestown, New Jersey; nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Mrs. Nauss is grateful for the loving, compassionate care Dr. Nauss received from the staff at Mercy Center and the Sisters of Mercy.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Mercy Center in Dallas on Dec. 22, 2014.

Celebration of Thomas' life will be held beginning with a gathering at 11 a.m. Saturday at McLaughlin's, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre. Graveside services with military honors will be held at noon at St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mrs. Nauss,
50 years ago, your husband performed surgery on my upper lip after I was hit with a tin can with its lid still attached. It was stitched by our family physician, but my lip would turn blue in cold weather. My mother took me to Dr. Nauss. He performed surgery on my lip and corrected its appearance and eliminated it turning blue. I am most thankful for his kind and superior care. I never forgot, nor, will I forget him. May he rest in peace as he has earned a special place in heaven. May God give you comfort.

Mrs. Nauss: Almost 50 years ago my three year old son was attacked by a dog and his ear was severally torn, Dr. Nauss met us at the hospital. He reattached his ear and one could never tell, it was perfect. We have always been a member of St. Catherine's in Moscow. I've often wanted to thank your husband later but never approached you both. I will forever be greatful, please accept my deepest condolences.

Mrs Nausea, I was a nurse at Mercy Hospital Scranton pediatrics for forty years when your husband Dr. Nauss did many children. I never met such a gentle, kind, sensitive, compassionate and caring physician and man. He was someone everyone looked up to. Truly a role model for how people should be treated and cared for. He was greatly honored and respected and his work was impeccable. He will not be forgotten he has touched many lives not only in the medical field but in human society. I was honored to have known him. God bless Nancy McDonough

Mrs. Nauss 31 years ago my son was a patient he was one year old. When my son went back for his check up Dr Nauss put my son on his desk and he was so kind. When he was finished he looked at me and said "I did't charge my first patient and there is no charge for you son he is my last patien", Dr. told me he was retiring that day. Such a wonderful man so sorry for your loss.
