Tillie Bonk Obituary
Tillie Bonk, a long-lived resident of Wilkes-Barre, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 26, 2007, in the Inpatient Unit of Hospice Care of the VNA, Heritage House, Wilkes-Barre.
Born on November 28, 1920, in Parsons, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Anna Serediuk Bonk. She attended Wilkes-Barre schools and the Empire Beauty School. She was formerly employed for Betty Corps Salon, Kingston. Since childhood, Tillie had a severe hearing problem, which did not prevent her from doing fine work, and everyone loved her for this.
Tillie also was employed in the Leon Ferenbach’s Silk Mill as a floor lady. She spent three years at Faith Shoe Company. She retired in 1987 after 27 years of service from the Carter Rubber Shoe Factory. Tillie also took special care of her elderly mother and father, whom she loved and respected dearly.
She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Wilkes-Barre, as well as the Parish Social Club and the church choir. Tillie’s favorite pastimes were knitting, crocheting, embroidery and baking. At Christmastime, she baked every kind of cookie, which were delicious and melted in your mouth. In later years, planting vegetables and flowers were her great joy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Sister Mary Christopher, OSBM, and Anna Legieza, and brother Peter Bonk.
Surviving are a sister, Stella Bonk, Wilkes-Barre; nephews John Legieza and wife Deborah, Fairfax, Va.; Michael Legieza and wife Sandra, Roslyn, N.Y.; Michael Bonk and wife Carolyn, Pasadena, Md.; a niece, Nancy Bonk Pawluszkoyez, and husband Walter, Evergreen, Colo.; several grand nieces and nephews; and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday from the Simon S. Russin Funeral Home, 136 Maffett St., Plains, with a Divine Liturgy and Requiem Service at 11 a.m. in Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, N. River St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Orest Kunderevych, pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in the parish cemetery, Plains. Friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Parastas service will be held at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
