William Carey Obituary

Mr. William A. Carey, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away peacefully at home, as he wished, surrounded by his family.
Born June 10, 1928, he was one of eight children born to William A. and Catherine Degnan Carey. After completing 10th grade, he began working to help support his parents and siblings. Known as “Uncle Bill” to many friends he was a self-taught man who went on to become a master electrician. Using that knowledge, he supplied many homes with electrical service following the Agnes flood of 1972. He always regretted not being able to serve his country due to rheumatic fever at age 16.
Mr.Carey retired from Heritage House in 1990 after 16 years. He worked many jobs to support his family. In better days he enjoyed hunting, fishing, square dancing and golf. More recently, he enjoyed find-a-word puzzles, riding on his scooter chair, watching “Law and Order” and the local news with his “Honey” and the companionship of his canine friends, Valentino, Pidgie, Tinkerbell, Calica and Remmy.
On June 1, 1957, he married the “love of his life,” Mary Elaine Kucirko, with whom he recently celebrated their 51st anniversary. From this union, God blessed them with five children, many grandchildren and adopted grandchildren. His daughter, Patricia Elaine, and her husband, Rocco Catalogna, Parsons, and their son, Eric Matthew, Mass.; son William Scott Carey and his wife, Marie, and their sons, Adam Scott and Nicholas William, all of Kingston; daughter Mary Elizabeth (Beth) and her husband, Dudley David Frey, Plymouth, and their children, Kyle Peter, Plymouth, Kelsey Elaine and her fiancé, David Wanzie, Hanover, and Dudley David Jr., Plymouth; son Mark Allan Carey and his fiancé, Michele Rockey, Brookside, and children James McEvoy, Brookside, Charity Rockey and her daughter, Damyah Rockey, Wilkes-Barre; daughter Kristen Leigh and her husband, Horace Lee Stancavage, Plains Township, their sons (all deceased), Horace Lee Jr., Karam Lee, Justus Lee, Angel Leigh, and Amier Lee; adopted granddaughter Heather Ogin, Plymouth; and adopted grandson Jim Skoniecki, Plymouth.
Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Peggy, and her husband, Joe Gatusky; brothers Joe, Ed, Dave, Bob and his wife, Barbara; father and mother-in-law Peter and Agnes Kucirko; brother-in-law Ken Smith; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Surviving in addition to his wife, children and grandchildren are his sister, Cathy, and her husband, Ron Williams, brother Richard Carey and his wife, Rita, sisters-in-law Alice, Harriet and Margaret Carey; many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and a large number of friends.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. from E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, with a Funeral Mass at 9:30 in St. Dominic’s Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Monday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: St. Dominic’s Church, 155 Austin Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18705. What Matt Frank, my older brother, said earlier in his entry reflects my thoughts about Bill, as well. I, too, have fond memories of Bill when visiting my late grandmother, Carmel Dunbar, who happened to live directly across the street from the Carey's on Woodward Avenue. He also came down a few times to our old house in East End when we were younger to give my parents some advice when they had just bought our first swimming pool. I remember him being a fine and humorous fellow. Bill, you will be missed.

I always thought that he was a funny person and always had something nice to say to me when I saw him. My grandmother and grandfather, Carmel and Tom Dunbar, thought the world of Bill. I will miss him also.
