Dr. Allan Gastfriend
Aliquippa - Allan Gastfriend, 92, of Aliquippa, PA passed away on Friday, January 22, 2021. He was born on January 20, 1929, son of the late Celia and Simon Gastfriend.
Allan was the loving and devoted husband for 68 wonderful years to the love of his life, Marlyn (nee Sussman). He was the best dad ever to Robert (Barbara) Gastfriend and Caron (David) Landay; and proud "PopPop" to four grandchildren: Kara and Paige Landay and Benjamin and David Gastfriend. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Sally Santman and is survived by his nephew, Steven Santman.
Allan was born and lived most of his life in Aliquippa and Hopewell. He was
proud to be from Aliquippa and a true Quippian! He graduated from Aliquippa High School in 1946 and Geneva College in 1949. He received a Masters Degree in Biology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. He served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War where he performed biological research in germ warfare. His research resulted in two published scientific papers.
In 1959, Allan graduated cum laude from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry and had a successful and fulfilling dental practice in Aliquippa for 34 years. He was a great dentist, loved his work and was adored by his patients.
Allan was active in the community where he served as the Hopewell Area School dentist and on the Hopewell Area School Board for 6 years, and as President for one year. He was on the Board of Directors of the Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit for two years. He also served as board director of Economy Savings Bank and later as an advisory board director for its successor, ESB Bank. Allan was an active member of the Masonic Lodge of Aliquippa, Beth Samuel Jewish Community Center, The Exchange Club of Aliquippa, and the Beaver County YMCA, in addition to multiple dental societies. After his retirement, he took great pleasure in woodworking and stained-glass artwork. During his lifetime, Allan exhibited many exemplary qualities. Education was very important to him - he was very intelligent and a hardworking honors student. He was a wise businessman. He was kind, loyal, honest, loving, friendly, well respected and organized. He was always a smart dresser and the consummate professional. Many people described him as a gentleman and a gentle man. Perhaps most importantly, Allan was dedicated to his family and was loved by everyone that knew him.
For the past three years, Allan and Mar were residents of Providence Point,
an Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing facility in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. They had four wonderful caregivers that were totally dedicated to them.
A private graveside ceremony was held on January 24, 2021. Arrangements
were by Wayne N. Tatalovich Funeral Home, Aliquippa.
