Hazel Gerber Obituary

"Together Again"
Hazel G. Gerber
97, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the Country Club Nursing Home in Dover. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Lucy (Sampsel) Gonter of Ragersville. Hazel married Norman Gerber in 1933 and enjoyed a wonderful marriage until his death in 1980. She was a long-time resident of Sugarcreek. Hazel was born Jan. 15, 1915 in Ragersville. She was a graduate of Sugarcreek- Shanesville High School and a member of the First Mennonite Church in Sugarcreek. She enjoyed family gatherings and especially her grandchildren. Playing cards, crossword puzzles, and bingo were favorite activities.
Hazel is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Linda (Lowell) Gerber of New Philadelphia; a son and daughter- in-law, Gordon (Sandy) Gerber of Newbury, Ohio and daughter-in-law, Ann Gerber of Galena, Ohio. She also leaves a sister, Iva Archinal of New Philadelphia. Seven grandchildren also survive her, Chris (Tami) Banks, Sam (Alice) Banks, Kathy (Scott) Schroeder, Lisa Gerber, Steve (Christine) Gerber, Jeff (Tina) Gerber, and Matt (Laura) Cavanaugh; two step grandchildren, Daren Gerber and Darci Gerber, along with 15 great-grandchildren also survive. Hazel was preceded in death by one son, James L. Gerber; son-in-law, Samuel H. Banks III; grandson, Michael S. Gerber, as well as her siblings, Grace (Edsel) Angel, Lucille Gonter, Erma (Harold) Stephon, Harold (Twila) Gonter, and Chester (Margaret) Gonter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Smith-Varns Funeral Home, 1018 West Main Street in Sugarcreek. Rev. Jayne Byler will officiate and burial will follow at Union Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday at 9:30 a.m. until time of service. For those unable to attend please visit the funeral home's website to share a memory and sign the guest register. In lieu of flowers, a donation to First Mennonite Church in Hazel's memory or to the Alzheimer's Association is suggested.
