Joseph R. Putney, Sr. 1933 - 2021
NEWPORT - Joseph R. Putney, Sr., 88, of Old State Road, passed away on July 26, 2021 at the St. Luke's Campus of MVHS, New Hartford.
Mr. Putney was born on April 12, 1933, in Utica, a son of the late Maxwell and Rose (Johnson) Putney. He graduated from West Canada Valley Central School in 1950. In 1953, he entered the U.S. Army and served with the 44th Field Artillery Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1955 at the rank of Sergeant. On December 30, 1955, Joe was united in marriage with the former Eleanor C. Jones in Newport. Joseph first worked as an operator at Material Sand and Gravel prior to accepting the position of Plant Superintendent at Eastern Rock Products. He later became Plant Superintendent at Poland Sand and Gravel and lastly at Hanson Aggregates, from where he retired. Eleanor preceded him in death on June 6, 2015.
Survivors include a daughter, Debra Maine and Edward Stack, of Newport; a son, Joseph (Michelle) Putney, Jr., also of Newport; four brothers, John (Joanne) Putney, of Fairfield, James (Margaret) Putney, of CA, Patrick (Birdie) Putney, of Poland and Michael (Pauline) Putney, of Vestal; a sister, Mary Putney (Don Bartley), of Minoa; five grandchildren, Tricia (Jason) Yager, Michael (Melissa) Maine, Alissa (Thomas) Roberts, Kyle Putney and Kaitlynne Putney; eight great-grandchildren, Hayley, Jenna and Connor Yager, Gavin, Sarah and Rowan Maine and Brynlee and Carlyle Roberts; brother-in-law, Fred Jones, of Utica; sister-in-law, Patricia (Richard) Roan, of MO; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Joe was predeceased by three brothers, Mark, William and Edward Putney; and a sister, Ann Miller.
Funeral services will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Newport Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conferred by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Calling hours at the funeral home are Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.
