Alfred Anderson Obituary

Anderson, Alfred H.
EAST GREENBUSH - Alfred H. Anderson, 100, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, following a short illness.
Born and raised in Troy, N.Y., Alfred was the son of the late Mae S. (Forde) and Alf Henry Anderson. He attended St. Joseph's School for the Deaf in the Bronx. A true lover of the outdoors and a lifelong sports enthusiast, Alfred was his grandchildren's biggest fan, cheering them on from T-ball through their college years. He enjoyed hiking and golf, and he remained an avid skier well into his 90s, eventually becoming a ski instructor. Alfred was active in many community organizations, including Deaf Seniors of Albany, Albany Silent Athletic Club, Capital District Deaf Center, and the Rensselaer Senior Bowling and Golf Leagues.
Alfred retired from the New York State Comptroller's Office Retirement System as a Clerk after 40 years of service, and enjoyed 42 wonderful years of retirement. Known for his bright smile, warm hugs, and gentle spirit, Alfred communicated with ease, despite being unable to hear or speak. He had a special gift for teaching American Sign Language, and spent meaningful time instructing Franciscan brothers, so they could better minister to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.
Alfred is survived by his daughter, Bernadette (Matthew) Johnson; four grandchildren, Stephen (Valerie), Joshua (Ashley), Emily (Nicholas), and Shannon; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 56 years, M. Helene Anderson; their son, Henry A. Anderson; his brother, Leonard Anderson; and his sister, Margaret Gardner.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday at 10 a.m., at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 175 Williams Rd., Troy, N.Y., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alfred's memory may be made to Camp Mark 7 at the Mark Seven Deaf Foundation, c/o Kelly Lange, P.O. Box 840313, St. Augustine, Fla. 32080, to support camper scholarship funds. The family is deeply grateful to all who have offered love and support during this time.
