Angel Millora Obituary

Millora, Angel B.
LOUDONVILLE - Angel B. Millora, M.D., was born on May 31, 1938, in Manila, Philippines to Borromeo and Salud Bueno Millora, along with siblings Consolacion Millora Labrador, Antonieta Millora Padua, Romeo Millora, Adolfo Millora, Virginia Millora Abello, and Borromeo Millora, Jr. Angel received his medical degree from the University of the Philippines in 1963. He immigrated with his wife, Anita S. Lansang-Millora, M.D., to Albany, New York in 1965 and became a U.S. citizen in 1982. On October 22, 2024, at the age of 86, Angel joined his soulmate Anita, who predeceased him on December 30, 2011.
Angel was a pioneer in the field of nephrology as a mentee of Dr. John Kiley. He served as chief of nephrology at St. Peter's Hospital (1992-1998) and held medical directorships of Albany Dialysis Corporation and Capital District Dialysis Center. His contributions to the field were recognized in 1997 when he was awarded Physician of the Year by the National Kidney Foundation.
During his early days in nephrology, Angel amazingly managed to find another Dr. Milora (single "l") practicing nephrology in the Capital District. Together, they founded the Capital District Renal Physicians in 1974. He later founded the Capital District Metro Medical Associates, P.C. and the Family Health Care Center in Slingerlands.
From 1965 to 2018, Angel practiced medicine at St. Peter's Hospital, Ellis Hospital, Memorial Hospital, Albany Medical Center, Child's Hospital, Guilderland Center Nursing Home, Albany County Residential Health Care Facility, and Ann Lee Nursing Home. He was passionate about his work as a healthcare provider and continually demanded excellence in care for his patients. He was unapologetic in this regard because he felt it was his responsibility as a physician and human being.
In addition to his work as a practitioner, Angel educated future generations of medical professionals through a multitude of academic appointments, beginning as an instructor at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine through his days as an Associate Professor in the Division of Renal Diseases at Albany Medical College.
Angel and Anita were loving parents to four daughters and their partners, Salina "Gigi" (Randall Pratt), Rosanna "Rosette" (Bryan W. Brown), Clarinda "Rena" (Kenneth Robin), and Melissa "Lisa" (Scott Barbour). Angel was also blessed to be grandfather or "Lolo" to Quentin and Alexandra "Sasha" Millora-Brown; Jaelin, Alexei "Alex," and Annika Robin; and Jasmine "Jazzy" Millora Barbour. He was honored to be chosen as godfather to dozens of children.
Angel instilled in his family a shared love for numerous hobbies including gardening, basketball, golf, bowling, fishing, swimming, tennis, and tossing out math problems at the dinner table. He treasured family retreats to Sandbridge Beach, Virginia, which reminded him of his childhood living in Subic, Zambales. Angel's favorite activity in recent years was experimenting in the kitchen and feeding family and friends his "Boy Scout concoctions."
Angel was steadfast in his loyalty and dependability throughout his life. He believed that if one was in a position to help, then one should. His generosity was unlimited, driven by a genuine desire to do good in the world and make it a better place for others. Along with his wife Anita, his love and support for his family was unwavering. Together, they will forever be in the hearts and souls of their children and grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Angel's family Saturday, November 9, 2024, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at St. Pius X Church, Loudonville, N.Y. His Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m.

My wife, Carol Ann Werblin, just mentioned that she heard about the passing of Angel. I was very surprised and, even more, greatly saddened. I am so sorry for this great loss to his family and those others closest to him. I graduated from Albany Med in 1971 and was fortunate to have an elective with Kiley, Milora, & Millora. They all, but most particularly, Angel, taught so much of Neprology, Medicine, and, most importantly, of how to conduct oneself as a physician, particularly that your attitude to acquiring more knowledge was your responsibility for the privilege of having others trust you with their care and that of their loved ones. In particular, I learned so much from Angel about the biochemistry & pathophysiology of fluids & electrolytes and how to apply this knowledge to help patients, both as a Med student and, later, when I returned to Albany Med for the continuation of my residency & fellowship. A bit later, my wife's grandmother was critically ill, including borderline renal failure, in a hospital in Schenectady and not improving. I called Angel and discussed the situation and he instructed to transfer grandma to Albany Med to his service. Within 12 hours of his attendance, there was some indication of improvement and af48 hours it was obvious that she was going to recover. After I became an attending in Pediatric Critical Care & Cardiology, out of the Albany area and then in General Emergency Medicine in upstate NY, about once to twice per year, including as recently as approximately 1 year ago, I would cahim for advice re, usually very difficult fluid & electrolyte problems I and my colleagues could not solve and every time he could clear it up for me. Often, including 1 year ago, he would say, "Bob, Yountville calling me with these ridiculously complex problems," to which I would respond, "Angel, I take care of the easy stuff myself; I need you when it's tough."
He was a terrific doctor, great teacher of both medicine and of how to serve our patients, and a delightful, friendly, kind human being. It was my great fortune to have had him in my life.
Robert Werblin, M.D.

As a student of Dr. Millie´s and later a colleague , he is remembered as a great teacher and friend. He was witty and sharp as a tack and it was an honor to know and work with him!
He will be missed! There are not many left of the old guard, who helped us develop to what we are today!

Angel was a very kind, understanding man. He was always ready to help, anyone, any time and any place. I had the pleasure of working with him for 17 years and I learned more than I ever thought possible from him. He was always there to guide. My deepest condolences to your entire family. Angel became my husband's doctor in 1976. He was an amazing doctor, but an even more amazing person. He helped us make some of the most difficult decisions at that time, Robert was only 24. He was always so caring and supportive. He was a huge part of keeping my Robeert alive to raise our boys to be good, capable men before he departed in 2009. Angel has and will always be considered family to us. Sending prayers for healing from my family to yours. We will never forget him.

Dear Millora Family.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know your hearts are sad as your Dad was an amazing man and will be missed.
Angel had an infectious smile and laugh. He was gentle and kind. His welcoming presence created a very comfortable environment.
My fondest memory was watching Angel enjoy feasting on Crab that had just come out of the water. Such fun and joy!
Gone...for now! But never forgotten! Sending love!

Our friendship goes back to 1967 when we were nephrology fellows at Albany Medical Center. We worked together later for many years and indeed, Angel, Bob Millora and myself organized the merger of AMC Nephrology and CDRP (Capital District Renal Physicians) (1984-1988).
Over the years, we have celebrated the culture of the Philippines together. Angel was a wonderful doctor, husband, father and friend. Truly one of the good guys!
He will be absolutely missed by both my family and me.
