Barbara Pettit Obituary

Pettit, Barbara Jean
COLONIE - Barbara Jean Pettit passed away March 28, 2025, peacefully at home. Born January 13, 1935, in Coxsackie, N.Y., to Kenneth and Bertha Carter, Barbara graduated from Coxsackie-Athens High School in 1951, and St. Peter's School of Nursing in 1954. She married Peter E. Pettit, the love of her life, in June 1955, and lived for more than 70 years in Colonie, where together they raised their three sons. She worked as a registered nurse at the Albany VA Hospital and St. Peter's Hospital, and she was one of the head nurses at Albany County Health Department, retiring in 1990.
Barbara is survived by sons, Peter (Maureen), David, and Michael (Renee); grandchildren, Mark (Emily), Andrew (Daniel), Olivia, John (Serena), Alexa (Nora), Samantha, and Cassidy; great-grandchildren, Lily, James, Maeve, and McKenna; several nieces and nephews; and her sister and lifelong best friend and confidante, Karen Ennis. As well, she leaves behind countless, decades-long friends from Colonie, including Shirley Kroll her beloved Beltrone crew, and NSB snowbirds. She was predeceased by her husband in 2010. Barbara (Mom, GMA, Great-Grandma, Aunt Barb) enjoyed travel, including several trips to Hawaii, winters in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and trips across the country and world, with her husband. She loved playing mahjong with friends and was a formidable opponent at nearly every game of Sequence she played with family. Her telltale finger-tapping and tongue-clicking were bad news for all. She was a communicant of the former St. Francis de Sales Church, now Christ Our Light, in Colonie, N.Y.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Barbara's family Wednesday, April 2, 2025, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany, N.Y. 12206. Please enter the funeral home from the rear parking lot entrance only.
Funeral services, Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 9:30 a.m., at Christ Our Light Church, Loudonville, N.Y., where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated by her beloved nephew, Father Tim Ennis. The Rite of Committal will be held at Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, immediately following the Funeral Mass

Dan and I are sincerely sorry for your loss. Barbara was a delightful, beautiful lady. She and our Mom, Joan were best buddies at Beltrone. Mom spoke highly of Barbara and loved her dearly. God rest her soul.
