Catherine Maloney Obituary

TROY Catherine E. Kay Broderick Maloney, 94, of the east side, died March 9, 2004 peacefully in her home surrounded by her family. Born in Troy, she was the daughter of the late John and Lillian Lavoine Broderick. She was the oldest of 10 Children. Kay was the wife of the late Joseph John Maloney Sr. They were married on November 25, 1937 and enjoyed 39 wonderful years of marriage. Mrs. Maloney graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1927 of Catholic Central High School. She also graduated from State Teacher's College in 1931, began her teaching career in West Leyden, N.Y. and went on to teach in schools in Troy, including School 5, School 15 and School 16. She continued her teaching career at Sacred Heart School and retired from the Troy School District. She loved teaching reading and language arts to junior high students. She was a lifelong learner. Kay was very dedicated to teaching and loved hearing about her students and their successes. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church where she was a member of the former Women's Club, serving as president at one time. She was also involved with the Sacred Heart Community in the Christian family movement and had been a member of the Parish Council. She loved living in the Sacred Heart Church community and was good neighbor and friend who cared for many in their time of need. Kay crocheted many beautiful items for family and friends and often said her legacy was that of her children and grandchildren who were all college educated. She took the greatest pride in being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and until recently, she stayed in touch with her family by e-mail once she became housebound. She enjoyed summer vacations at Hedge's Lake with her family as well as traveling to Cape Cod and to Florida with her husband in their retirement. Catherine was an avid reader and bridge player, was a great debater of political and current events and she enjoyed following the stock market. Survivors include five children, Kathleen Hepp (Don) of Latham, Martha (Marcy) Roche (Mike) of Rensselaer, Patricia Micone (Robert) of Tustin Ranch, Calif., Eileen (Lee) Glasheen (Kevin) of Troy and Joseph Maloney (Lori) of Clifton Park; 15 grandchildren, Don, Karen, Sue, David and Kevin, Maura, Erin, Patrick and Brendan, Michelle and Roger, Sean and Kate and Ryan and Jennifer; seven great-grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel, Marissa, Conor, Ryan, Jack and Caroline; her sister and best friend, Marion Demarest of Watervliet and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by eight siblings. The funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Troy where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Sacred Heart Church on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations in Mrs. Maloney's memory may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 310 Spring Ave., Troy, NY 12180 or to Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144. The family is greatly indebted to the many people who lovingly cared for our mother, enabling her to remain in her home over the past 10 months, especially home health aides, hospice staff and neighbors.

Erin and family,

What a wonderful woman "Aunt Kay" was. She was so kind and soft spoken. The memory of her and "Grandma Demarest" sitting in their lawn chairs on Broderick's lawn at the lake is like it was just yesterday. I hope all the wonderful memories of your granmother/mother will help you through this sad time. With deepest sympathy.
