Charles Hoffman Obituary

Hoffman, Charles STEPHENTOWN Charles E. Hoffman, 89, died peacefully Thursday, June 2, 2016, at his home with his children at his side. Born in Cambridge, on June 5, 1926, he was the son of the late Martin and Jennie May Sherman Hoffman. Charles was raised in Hoosick Falls and left high school early to enlist in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II. Charles was sent to France and Belgium where he fought in the Colmar Pocket along the Rhine River. His brother Sherman was fighting in the same conflict only 10 miles away and was killed during the battle. Charles was awarded the Bronze Star for his brave actions. In 2014, he was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame by Senator Kathy Marchione. After the war, he was employed by Montgomery Ward & Co. and built nuclear submarines in Groton, Conn. He then joined the Carpenters Union Local 291 in Albany and was a carpenter and millwright until his retirement. He was a member of the Veteran's of Stephentown and past commander of the Nassau VFW Post #8162 and was grand marshall for the Nassau Memorial Day Parade. He was the longest living member of the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department serving his community for over 60 years. He enjoyed hunting, camping, loved to draw and had a great sense of humor. He was the beloved husband of the late Phyllis E. Sweener Hoffman who died in 2011; devoted father of Nancy Gabriel of East Greenbush and Danny (Nancy) Hoffman of Stephentown; grandfather of Elizabeth, Alison, Nicholas and Jaclyn Gabriel, Danny (Karen) Hoffman II, Nathan Hoffman and Tara (Eric) Bouchard; great-grandfather of Makaylah, Jaxson, Devon, Bryant and Jaden. He was predeceased by several brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hall & Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY 43, Stephentown. Interment will follow in the Stephentown Cemetery with military and fire department honors. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the funeral home on Saturday from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to BMC Cancer Treatment Patient Care Assistance Fund, 165 Tor Court, Pittsfield, MA 01201. To all of Charlies immediate family..Charlie is not only my Brother in law But Walt and I remember him as a REAL Brother as well as Our second cousin...I believe that he and Curly are truly dancing the Polka with Jimmy Stur up their in HEAVEN ! of Course Walt is right their Cheering them on and to dance all night..As I am here on earth It seems so lonely now that I miss His brotherly love ..
