Chester Bolen Obituary

Bolen, Chester H. "Chet" Sr. SELKIRK Chester H. Bolen Sr., "Chet," peacefully entered Heaven on Saturday, February 12, 2022, at his home in Selkirk, with his family attending him. Chet was born on May 22, 1923, to Charles and Mary Bolen in North Tonawanda, N.Y. The second of three children, he spent many summers at his family's farm in Culpeper, Va. After graduation from high school in 1940, the family moved to Falls Church, Va., and Chet entered the University of Virginia. Earning a chemistry degree in 1943, he then joined the Navy during World War II. After a deployment to the Philippines, he returned to UVA to work on his master's degree. There he met his wife of 70 years, Joan Brubaker, at an InterVarsity Christian Fellowship prayer meeting. They married in 1947, and Chet began his 38-year career as a research chemist at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in Rensselaer. The growing Bolen family moved from Delmar to Selkirk in 1961. Chet was a long-time member of Pineview Community Church (Christian & Missionary Alliance) in Albany, where he enthusiastically served in the choir, as an elder, board member, and Sunday School teacher as well as in many other positions. Chet and Joan generously housed visiting speakers and musical groups and many who needed a place to call home. Chet was known for his easy-going demeanor and calming presence. Even as he often worked multiple jobs to provide for his wife and 15 children, he served his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whenever the opportunity arose. He always put others before himself and was an excellent example of Christian discipleship and devotion. Chet was an avid gardener of ornamentals and vegetables, a passion he first developed on the family farm during the Depression. As necessitated, he was an electrician, mechanic, and plumber, and he enjoyed carpentry as a hobby. He also volunteered at several archeological sites in the Town of Bethlehem. Chet was predeceased by his wife Joan; a son, John Lewis; three daughters, Barbara Joan, Virginia "Ginny," and Mary Lou (Steve) Walker; and his brother, Wallace (Rose) of Kansas City, Mo. He is survived by his children, Bruce (Katrina), of Martinsville, Va., Nancy Brennan of Delmar, Jill (Rance) Gregory of Slingerlands, Bobby (Joanne) of Mesa, Ariz., Jim (Pam) of Fredericksburg, Va., Missy (Kevin) McGrath of Forest, Va., Wally, of Nokesville, Va., Cathy (Bill) Gettys of Selkirk, Rich (Lisa) of Columbia, S.C., Chip (Loraine) of Fredericksburg, Va. and Jennifer (Rob) Reimer of Congers, N.Y.; 35 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; his sister, Roberta (Lee) Childs of Oakton, Va.; his brother-in-law, Robert (Kitty) Brubaker of Lynchburg, Va., and many nieces and nephews. Calling hours and services, held in the Pine View Community Church, 251 Washington Ave Ext, Albany. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 22, from 3-6 p.m. The service will be held on Wednesday, February 23, at 9 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Wycliffe.org/donate or capitalcityrescuemission.org

To the Extended family of Chester Bolen, my most sincere condolences. O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of thy servant Chester Bolen and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

SAFELY HOME

I am home in Heaven, dear ones;
Oh so happy and so bright!
There is perfect joy and beauty
In this everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever,
Safely home in Heaven at last.
Did you wonder I so calmly
Trod the valley of the shade?
Oh, but Jesus' love illumined
Every dark and fearful glade.
And He came Himself to meet me
In that way so hard to tread;
And with Jesus' arm to lean on,
Could I have one doubt or dread?
Then you must not grieve so sorely,
For I love you dearly still,
Try to look beyond earth's shadows,
Pray to trust our Father's will.
There is work still waiting for you,
So you must not idly stand;
Do it now, while life remains,
You shall rest in Jesus' land.
When that work is all completed,
He will gently call you Home;
Oh, the rapture of that meeting,
Oh, the joy to see you come !

I thank the Lord Christ Jesus for the splendid and faithful life of Mr. Chet Bolen. I met the Bolen family when I was a college student at SUNY @ Albany during the Fall of 1974. I was part of the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship group of campus, and Pineview Community Church was the adherent church for many believers in IVCF. Mr. and Mrs. Bolen and their wonderful family always exhibited God´s faithfulness. I also remember during this year, Albany City Major Erastus Corning III presided over part of a Sunday service with Pastor Willard Davis as senior pastor, which dedicated the building of a Christian school, which I taught in during the 1979-1980 school year. This year, I taught three Bolen children, namely Wally, Cathy and Richard (whose nick name was Hitch). The children reflected the steadfastness of their parents, and obviously that of Mr. Bolen. The children are now quite successful thanks to the steadfastness of their special parents. I remember to Mr. Bolen´s booming voice - or what I perceived to be booming. With this stated, he always expressed care and concern for others, and was a longstanding pillar at Pineview Community Church.
I am greatful that the Lord gave Mr. Bolen a long-life, and I know that Mr. Bolen used the many years in total and faithful service to our Lord Christ Jesus and to the Kingdom of God. I am richly blessed to have known Mr. Bolen. He and his wife were an outstanding example of what it means to be devoted to God, family, church, and people that the Lord put in our paths.
One last thing: I never knew that Mr. Bolen was from Virginia until his son Wally informed me around 2007 or 2008. I understand in part why Wally has taken residence in Virginia. Wally knows how special his dad has been to family and to many more over these many years.
In closing, I share my deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Mr. Chet Bolen - a special man of God.
