ALBANY - Dorothea Kontogiannis died on September 22, 2025.
Dorothea was born in Albany, N.Y., on October 26, 1927, the daughter of Constantine and Agorou (Mitoulis) Sofologis. She was the cherished wife of the late Athanasios Kontogiannis, devoted mother of Arete (Phil) Sprio, George Kontogiannis, and Constantine (Leanne) Kontogiannis, and beloved grandmother of Philip (Abby) Sprio, Gabrielle Sprio, Melissa Kontogiannis, and Nicole Kontogiannis. Dorothea was predeceased by her husband; parents; brothers, John and Nicholas Sofologis; and other relatives and close friends. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Dorothea was a graduate of Albany High School and Mildred Elley Business School. Until she married, Dorothea was employed as an executive secretary at Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Albany. Dorothea met Athanasios Kontogiannis in 1962 and they married in 1963 in Albany. She became an integral part of her husband's business, helping him achieve his ambition to become a successful real estate developer. Dorothea's greatest accomplishment, however, was the family she built with her husband. She was a loving, kind, and nurturing mother and grandmother who always put her family first. Her greatest satisfaction was watching her children and grandchildren grow into adulthood.
Dorothea was a faithful participant of St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Albany, and an active member of the Philoptochos, Daughters of Penelope, and choir for many years.
Calling hours are Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Rd., Albany, N.Y., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Albany.
Contributions may be made in Dorothea's memory to Albany Medical Center Children's Hospital or St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church.
