I'll always remember our times at SCC, making music or just hanging together in the café with other friends: Sara Lee, Gail, Ishmael, Catfish, and others whose names I have temporarily misplaced. Good times.
Farewell, old friend.

If anyone remembers the Judy Garland song "The Boy Next Door" - Doug was the boy next door. When my husband and I moved to Perry Avenue in Latham back in 1964 Doug was a kid and I got to watch him along with the other boys on our street Bill Cornelius, Sterling Post, Bob Cowan and a few others whose name escape me now. Being only 8 years older than Doug and the boys they were always welcome in our home and we had a different relationship than they had with their own parents. Our house was a kind of hang out at times and Doug's love for music was so evident back then. I moved away in 1973 and lost touch with Doug until thanks to Bill, we again found each other via e mails and then FB. Doug even drove out to see me a few years ago while I was doing a Greyhound adoption event and we talked for hours about our love for dogs - he had his Stoli back then. We had kept in touch on occasion - I always remembered his birthday as it was the same as my ex-husbands - and whenever I got some photos of guitars or musicians I thought Doug would appreciate seeing and hearing, I sent them to him. He was such a kind and gentle soul, also funny and so intelligent - the perfect mix in a man. I am having trouble accepting the fact that he is gone. How he loved his Katy and how very proud of the woman she had grown to be - this world is a sadder place without Doug and I will miss him always

Through FB, I recently reconnected with Doug, after 47 years. Although a few years older than I am, Doug was my first tangible "bass influence". As Shaker HS students in the early 70s, we used to jam at Denis (RIP) and Mark Meade's house, along with The Schoonbeck brothers, Jack Yuzenko (RIP), David Malachowski, Skip Johnsen, and scores of others. Doug being Doug, he never made the "kid" (me) feel like anything less than a musical equal. He was THAT GUY.
Back then, I secretly lusted after his Hagstrom bass. I laughingly told him that on Black Friday when he was kind enough to stop by to see me play with PKB at a gig near his home in Niskayuna. I had the chance, thankfully, to spend about a half hour with him before the gig just catching up on each other's lives.
Doug was a great guy and gentle soul who had a lifelong passion for music and recently was on a prolific writing and recording tear. We, like the old days, were trading and listening to each other's tunes and a bunch of them spoke to me as true glimpses at pieces of who he was.
If you wish to meaningfully honor Doug's memory, please ... really listen to his music. I know he would like that.

Born on the 4th of July! Veteran of Fort Apache. And the kindest most cleverly carcastic and most loving human I've ever known. Doug was his own man, starting out as early as grade school and lasting until whatever it was that took him all too soon. Musician, philosopher, reiki master, kind soul! We will miss you deeply Douglas. My love for you passes on to your daughter and her family.

I will miss you greatly sweet man.... you're smiling, kind face and generous nature warmed the hearts of many, I'm sure. You were truly one of a kind!!
My thoughts are with your family and friends during this unfortunate, sad time.
