Edmund McMahon Obituary

McMahon, Edmund J. DELMAR Edmund J. McMahon, of Delmar, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at the Community Hospice at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a long illness. He was 87. He was born and raised in White Plains, the youngest child of Joseph C. and Lucy (Smith) McMahon. After graduating from White Plains High School, he joined the County Trust Co. in 1941. During World War II, he served in the European theater with the U.S. Army 47th Field Hospital. Following the war, he returned to the County Trust, where he ultimately rose to the position of vice president for business development. At the time of his retirement in 1982, he was vice president of the County Trust Region of the Bank of New York. He subsequently worked for several years as a banking consultant. He was married September 8, 1951 to the former Jane Marie Shine of White Plains. He lived in the town of Cortlandt before moving in 1966 to Mahopac, where he was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church. He retired in 1990 to the Otsego County hamlet of Westville, where he was an officer of the Westville Grange, a member of the Milford Rotary Club, and a member of the choir at St. Mary's Church in Cooperstown. He moved in 2002 to Cobleskill and earlier this year to Delmar, where he was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Charming and gregarious, he enlivened many parties with his singing and piano playing. He could play anything by ear, favoring an eclectic mix of popular music, ragtime, and Gilbert & Sullivan. A devout Catholic, in his late 80s, he could still recite the Latin responses he learned as an altar boy at St. John the Evangelist Church in White Plains. He was predeceased by his brothers, Harold and Frank, both of White Plains Leo of Magnolia, Md., and sister, Agatha (McCabe) of White Plains. He is survived by his wife and by his sons, Edmund J. Jr. (Joan) of Delmar, Peter of Patterson, Robert (Elizabeth) of Alexandria, Va., and Christopher of Delmar; and daughter, Patricia (Steven) Houser of Carmel. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank his devoted caregivers Pam Davis, Jonee Forte, LaQuinta Payton, Veronica Sutherland, Ciara Woods, Emily Penett and Karen John, and the hospice staff. Visiting hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Church in Cooperstown. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cooperstown. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Community Hospice.

Reading about your dad, a WWII veteran,a member of the Rotary, and the Grange, playing th popular standards by ear, I couldn't help but think that he led an exemplary American life.
