Edward Bender Obituary

Bender, Edward J. GLENMONT Edward J. Bender, 74, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany on February 11, 1943, he was the son of the late Robert M. and Winifred J. Bender. He graduated in 1960 from Cardinal McCloskey High School and Siena College in 1964. Upon graduating from Siena, Ed went to work for Niagara Mohawk, retiring in 1999. In August, 1963, Ed married Mary Anne Bowen and they began their beautiful life together. Ed and Mary Anne enjoyed summer vacations at Ogunquit, Maine and weekends at the Sagamore Hotel in Bolton Landing. He loved fishing and kayaking on the Hudson River and spending time with his family. Ed was a loving husband, caring father and grandfather who loved helping his neighbors. Ed is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Mary Anne; children, Edward J. Bender (Holli) of San Diego and Cathleen Clark (Jeff) of Glenmont; grandchildren, Gabriella Rene Bender, Amanda Jane Clark and Sarah Anne Clark; brother, Robert M. Bender (Katherine) of Saco, Maine; sister-in-law, Lorraine Sellnow of Voorheesville; his best friend and coffee buddy, Frank Travis; and canine companions, Zoey, Sadie and Toby. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Garbo and Randi Daniels for their compassionate and caring support. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, in Historic St. Mary's Church on Capitol Hill, corner of Lodge and Pine Streets, Albany. Friends and neighbors are welcome to attend. Burial will be private following the Mass in the Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Penny Lane, Latham, NY, 12110. applebeefuneralhome.com
