Eugene Levy Obituary

COLONIE Eugene A. Levy, 68, died on Saturday, October 30, 2004 at his home of 35 years, after losing his bout with lung cancer. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Elmer M. and Fanny Kaufman Levy, and the stepson of Augusta Singer Levy. For most of his life, under his byline of Gene Levy, he worked as a sports writer for upstate New York newspapers, starting with the Oneonta Star from 1959-62, the Elmira Star Gazette from 1963-67, and the Knickerbocker News and the Times Union from 1967 until his retirement in 1991. More recently, he wrote for the Echo, a weekly paper in Averill Park, and was the news editor for the Ravena News Herald. In his retired years, Eugene conceived of and founded the Capital District Sports Hall of Fame, into which the first class was inducted in February 2003. He was a lifelong tennis and golf enthusiast and player. Eugene is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Marie Levy. He is also survived by Donald Levy, son, of Albany, Steven Levy, son, and his wife Daryl of Cranford, N.J. and Alexander and Chloe Levy, grandchildren, of Cranford, N.J.; his sister, Susan A. Levy of Brooklyn; his brother, Stuart D. Levy and his wife Susan P. Levy of Manhattan; and his aunt, Helen A. Singer of Boca Raton, Fla. Calling hours will be held from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4 at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd., Colonie (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave). A funeral service will immediately follow at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12304 in memory of Eugene A. Levy.
