Genevieve Gallagher Obituary

Gallagher, Genevieve A.
ALBANY - Genevieve A. Gallagher, 97, of Albany N.Y. passed away peacefully at home on Oct 23rd. Jen was a graduate of St Peter's Hospital School of Nursing in 1949, and began her career in the OR at St. Peter's Hospital. She then went on to work in the office of Robert H. Randles, M.D., and eventually became a home health caregiver to his father. She worked in Occupational Health for the U.S. Post Office, at the Leo O'Brien federal building and OSHA, for 30 years. After retirement, she continued to work for the N.Y.S. Education Department. She volunteered endlessly for the Elks, American Legion, Marine Corp League, and at the John McKenna military courtesy room, at Albany International Airport. Jen was also a Girl Scout leader for many years, imparting her knowledge and skills to countless young Girl Scouts.
Jen was predeceased by her loving husband, Richard J. Gallagher.
She is survived by her children, Deborah Hirt, Claudia Toffel, Ned Hirt (Judy), and Matthew Hirt (Cheryl Landry); her grandchildren, Justin McCall (Tracy Dushane), Anna Hirt (Thaddeus), Ryan Toffel and Matthew Hirt; her great-grandchildren, Patrick McCall, Christopher McCall, Noah Hirt and Paige and Ashton Brabender.
Jen had many friends who enjoyed her company and eccentric wit. She always said "Friends are the family you choose."
Dear friend of Kathy Henry and her family; the Rooney family; her supportive and loving neighbor Cathy; and "the hens," Karen and Elaine, her lunch buddies.
Special thanks to Shannon LaVigne, her loyal and beloved aide for two years, and her family, especially Riley. With gratitude to her other aides, Jennifer, Deb, Maude, Claudia and Kathy, who with their care, allowed her the privilege of staying in her own home until she went to her home with God.
A celebration of life will be held at the Joseph E. Zaloga American Legion Post, 4 Everett Rd., Albany, on Saturday, November 15, beginning at 11 a.m., with a luncheon to follow. All are invited. Jen always said "The more the merrier."
Donations in her memory may be made to the VMC (Veterans Miracle Center), the VCHC (Veterans Community Housing Coalition), and the John Mc Kenna military courtesy room at Albany International Airport.
As a final gift, Jen donated her body to Albany Medical College Anatomical Gift Program.

I worked with Genevieve at the John J Mckenna military welcome center for her last year on earth. I loved her stories, one liners and wit. She certainly loved volunteering and advising young men and women heading off to boot camp. On the snowy and cold days especially I enjoyed her family´s ancestry and incredible stories. I´ll never look at Halloween the same again! I expect her to show up riding a broom in a witches costume for trick or treats. She was certainly a great woman and had a beautiful heart and always in my thoughts and prayers

One of kind I will always remember her sharp and honest comments that had a little smile with them. Condolences to a family that I consider my own. God Bless

When Genevieve got up to heaven, and St Peter asked how she was, I am sure she answered "miserable as ever". She was one of a kind, and I had the privilege of knowing her and volunteering with her for the past 10 years, give or take a little. She will be missed very much by all of us who met her. She was an inspiration and a role model for my wife and I on how to age with dignity. I never grew tired of her sharing the same stories about the MCR with all the new recruits and travelers who visited the room. She especially loved the visits from the various service dogs, who she tried to overfeed. She will be dearly missed, as we had a lot of fun. RIP my dear.

Genevieve was my client for many years but I also considered her a friend. The "wicked witch" as she called herself was always ready with a joke. I always asked how she was and she'd say "miserable as ever" and I'd respond "thank goodness nothing has changed".
We corresponded even after I retired. She was a giving lady and we will miss her. Mr. & Mrs. "B"
