George Ferris Obituary

Ferris, George Gene Jr. LATHAM George Gene "Sammy" Ferris Jr., 76, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 1, 2010 after having been stricken at home. Born in Troy on January 15, 1934, he was the son of the late George G. and Lillian Grande Ferris Sr. He grew up in South Troy and was educated in the Troy Schools and LaSalle Institute. Following high school, Gene proudly served his country during the Korean War and, during his military service, he achieved the distinction of being the All Navy amateur boxing champion of 1952. On his return from the service, he entered into a career in food service and worked in that field for many years. He was the owner/operator of the popular Sammy's Pizza in Latham, and enjoyed his many customers and friends there prior to his retirement. He also enjoyed cooking at home for his family. He was a generous, kind, loving son, husband, father, grandfather, nephew, cousin and friend to many and he will be truly missed. Survivors include his beloved wife of 42 years, Barbara Woollard Ferris; his devoted children, Samuel G. and Eric A. (Kristin) of Latham; his first wife, Ann Pasinello Ferris; and their children, Deborah (Bill) Bennett of Rock City Falls, Daniel (Rosanne) Ferris of Troy, David (Donna) Ferris of Gansevoort, Scott Samard of Fla., George G. Ferris III (Geraldine) of Latham, Donna (Mike) Venturiello of Ballston Spa, and Frank P. Ferris (Dorrae) of Latham; 21 cherished grandchildren; his special uncle, Stephen Ferris of Nashville, Tenn.; and many cousins and special friends. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 5 at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Pius X, Crumitie Rd., Loudonville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville. Friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Rd., Latham. Memorial contributions would be appreciated to the American Diabetes Association, 2 Pine West Plaza, Albany, NY 12205 or to a charity of one's choice. To the Ferris/Pasinello family.
It has been awhile since I have seen many of you or my cousins Ann Pasinello, Daniel , George , Deborah. My sincerest condolences on the passing of Gene. My thoughts & prayers are with all of you at this time. Gene was indeed a good man and did help me during a difficult period in my life. Reading the guest book I have to agree with Joe Allen…”the funny stories he used to tell, the Italian and Lebanese curse words we learned, all the characters who hung around the pizzeria”. My memories of him go back to the old South Troy day’s when he sold Christmas Trees. Hopefully I will see each of you again when I return to the area.

Sincerely

David Guariglia

Sammy, Eric, Mrs. Ferris -

I was very sad to hear the news that Mr Ferris passed away earlier this week. I have so many fond memories of the times we spent together when Sammy and I were growing up. Mr Ferris was always so generous w/ me. There is no telling how many nice meals he bought me over those years :), how many cool places you/he took me, etc. Every time I have thought of him since hearing yesterday, it makes me sad but the memories also make me smile - the funny stories he used to tell, the Italian and Lebanese curse words we learned, all the characters who hung around the pizzeria. :) It was all very magical for me just to be around it all. He was really a kind of celebrity in Latham.

I also remember how proud he would be after Sammy had one of his big games in baseball - just exploding with pride - that big smile of his from ear to ear. He loved you all very much.

Anyway, I am happy to have known him and get to spend that time with your family when I was growing up. I'm sure it is part of who I am now. Take care. Much love. Joe
