He was the son of the late Grace and Edwin Longhurst. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Longhurst, his wife of 62 years, who predeceased him in 2005. George graduated from the former Mont Pleasant Technical High School, Schenectady, N.Y. in 1937, attended the University of Michigan and went to work for the General Electric Company as a mechanical engineer.
