Hoffman, Jack
NEWTONVILLE - John "Jack" R. Hoffman, 90, of Newtonville, passed away peacefully at his residence, on Monday, November 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 9, 1935 in Albany, Jack lived a long and fulfilling life marked by dedication to his work, devotion to his family and a quiet but profound influence on those around him.
Jack began his professional journey at Litton before moving on to Hoffman's Playland, where he became a familiar and respected figure. His work ethic and commitment left a lasting impression on colleagues and visitors alike. Beyond his career, Jack was known for his remarkable skills as a handyman. His talents in electronics, carpentry and working with cars made him the go-to person for fixing just about anything, whether it was rewiring a circuit or restoring an old engine. Jack approached every task with patience and precision.
He was more than just skilled with tools, Jack was also a mentor and teacher to many. His quiet wisdom and steady presence offered guidance and support to those fortunate enough to learn from him. He had a unique ability to inspire confidence in others simply by being himself.
Jack's family was central to his life. He is lovingly remembered by his son, Kenneth (Pam) Hoffman; and daughter, Donna Patterson; his cherished grandchildren, Monica, Shelbie, John and Kiley; his devoted sisters, Mary Weinman and Nancy Rich. He shared a deep bond with his best friend Judith Ogborn, whose friendship brought joy and companionship through the years. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Kay; his mother, Theresa; father, John R. Hoffman, and others who shaped the early chapters of his life.
In addition to his many talents and relationships, Jack held a special place in pop culture lore. He was secretly the muse for the character "Carl," in the animated film "UP," a fitting tribute to a man whose quiet strength and enduring loved mirrored that of the beloved character. Jack's legacy lives on through the lived he touched as a father, grandfather, brother, friend, mentor, craftsman, and as someone who quietly made the world a better place with each small act of care. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Jack's family on Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Cannon Funeral Home, 2020 Central Ave., Colonie. A prayer service will follow at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Albany (
