James McGowan Obituary

McGowan, James M.D. NEW YORK James (Jim) McGowan died September 17, 2011 in New York City after a brief illness. A native of Paducah, Ky., he lived in New York City for most of his adult life and reveled in its culture, particularly films and the theatre. In recent years he began to spend much of his leisure time in Albany, which he loved for its small town feel and historic district. His career was an important part of his life: he missed only one day of work in more than 40 years of seeing patients in his psychiatry practice. He served as a doctor in the Navy for five years after graduating from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, and his tales of that time were legendary. A lifelong sports fan, he was particularly fond of horse racing - thanks to his Kentucky roots, University of Kentucky basketball and of the football team at the University of Notre Dame, his undergraduate alma mater. He was a dear husband, father, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife, Riva (Rosati); his siblings, Bernard (Sharyn) McGowan and Betty (Michael) Polashock; his children, Amanda (Lawrence) Vitale, Benjamin (Cara) McGowan, Christina Rosati, Edward Strachan (Alyona Kadatskaia); and three grandchildren, as well as many of the people he cared about and helped. A memorial service is planned for late October.
