James Welch Obituary

ALBANY - James T. Welch, 75, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2023. He was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Welch of Albany, N.Y.
After attending Cathedral Academy and graduating from Cardinal McCloskey High School in 1968, James enlisted in the United States Army where he served proudly as military police in Okinawa, Japan from 1969 to 1971, until his honorable discharge. James worked for 17 years for the Internal Revenue Service and retired as a courier for St. Peter's Health Partners after over 20 years of service.
James enjoyed spending time with his entire family especially his Sundays with Anna and Weiland. He was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees, Miami Dolphins, and Larry Bird's Boston Celtics. James was an avid golfer who enjoyed watching Phil Mickelson play. When he wasn't spending time with his family, James was enjoying a cup of coffee with friends, John E., Ricky C., Philip B., Bill D., Jimbo M., and Pat C.
James is survived by his daughters, Alicia (Brian Zayhowski) Welch Pontore, and Nicole (Russell) Dauphinais; grandchildren, Andrew Sheehan, Josephina Pontore, Tiffany Zayhowski, and Anna and Weiland Dauphinais; and many great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (the late Loretta) Welch, of Latham, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, James is predeceased by his siblings, Helen, William Jr., Patricia, Charles, and Sandra; and his close friend, John Zaloga.
Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, New York 12189 on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, New York.

6/10/23
On 5/30/23, we face booked the following message, to be added to others that provide comments. Only to discover our message below was not delivered. We wanted to be timely with our feelings.

Dear Jim, 5/30/23
We are speaking to you, because you are only close by on the other side of the door that the Lord opened to welcome you.
We all believe that we will all be back together with you some day,
Today on Facebook my wife Rena Altieri Schewe(shoe-e) just received news of your passing through the door.
Not an excuse, but a life event prevents us from attending your services.
However when we think and pray for you; we will always remember Rena and her brothers knowing you since grade school at Cathedral, our lunches when you came to the Syracuse area, our high school reunions, and the past 50threunion, contacts with you in the Albany area and your coaching of our team in the Lincoln Park Bowl years ago.
To your family, loved ones and our mutual friends, you will always be in our memories and hearts forever.
Eternal Love
Don & Rena

Jimmy´s mom, Mrs. Welch was among the initial group of Albany´s school crossing guards. She was stationed at Delaware and Jefferson while at the same time, my mother was stationed at Lark and Hamilton.
I believe they posed together for the local newspaper wearing their sparkling new uniforms. Yes, uniforms in those early days including white belt and shoulder sling.
In subsequent years, Mrs. Welch and I would always greet each other as valued neighbors. She and my mother were BFFs. I can say the same for Jimmy and me.
Though years apart, often we chose the same path, i.e. Albany Boys Club, Lincoln Park, Cathedral Academy. We spent several seasons together playing adult softball, too.
He was a gifted athlete, loyal and friendly and someone I´ll forever miss.
Rest in heavenly peace, Jimmy

Just heard of Jimmy's, aka "Unkie", passing. He was a classmate, teammate and friend at McCloskey. Ran into him on Okinawa when he was an MP. Quite a surprise! Had a good conversation at our 50th reunion. One of the good ones. RIP
