I have fond memories of when, during a tour of Conrail's Selkirk Yard, John was given permission to take a photo of the detouring LAKE SHORE LINITED from the roof of the hump tower. What a photo!

For some reason—I don't know why—I was just thinking of Mr. Bartley last week. So I was shocked last night when Dad told me about his passing last Friday.
I had only met him a few times, including December 1989 where we chanced to meet at GE's cafeteria when I worked a temp mailroom job. (He and my Dad were at GE a heckuva lot longer than me!) Within the last year or so Matt and Ellen had told me about how he was getting on and about his train hobby. So I didn't know him except for brief meetings and through Ellen talking about him.
I want to express my sorrow for his passing to Ellen, Matt, David and Megan, the Bartleys and extended families and friends. From what I know of Mr. B, he was indeed a friendly, good man. May he rest in peace.
Matt's brother and Ellen's brother-in-law, with sympathy,

My heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Bartley family at this sad time.
John was soft spoken and seemed to be everybody's friend. All those that knew John throughout the years of working at GE knew his passion for trains. By which giving him the well deserved nickname of "Chooch".
Also all the lunch meetings and celebrations he had a passion for rolls.
Rest in peace my friend

John was a consummate railfan and photographer, who was very helpful to those of us newer at being railfans and could use lots of help. I loved how he was always jumping up to take a picture. And his hair, which seemed to go in all directions at once. John was a real friend, who will be missed.
