John Albert Dolan

Dolan, Dr. John HILTON HEAD, S.C. Dr. John (Jack) Albert Dolan, husband of Juliana L. Dolan, passed away July 24, 2011. He was born in Washing-ton, D.C., on May 16, 1935, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John and Philomena Dolan of Chevy Chase, Md. During his youth he resided in Chevy Chase, Md., and attended Georgetown Preparatory School. He received his B.S in biology from Georgetown University and his medical degree from George Washington University Medical School. Following a year of medical internship at Albany Medical Center he served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He completed his residency at Albany Medical Center in New York and the A.I. Dupont Children's Hospital in Delaware where he completed his fellowship in children's orthopedics. Dr. Dolan practiced as an orthopedic surgeon at Ellis Hospital, St. Clare's and Sunnyview Medical Centers in Schenectady, N.Y., for 28 years. He was a board certified member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the N.Y.S. Orthopedic Society. During his practice Dr. Dolan resided in Niskayuna, N.Y., where he raised four children and actively served his community as president of Niskayuna Little League for three years and as the Niskayuna High School football physician for 20 years. He also loved being involved with his children's numerous sports activities. He and his wife Julie retired in 1998 to Hilton Head, S.C. Dr. Dolan is survived by his wife of 46 years; children Kathleen (Stanton) Taylor, Janet (Andrew) Bacik, Jack (Jill) Dolan, and Ashley (Will) Kirk; along with eleven grandchildren, Payton and Parker Taylor, Eileen, Meghan, Brian and Lauren Bacik, Erin, Ryan and Cassidy Dolan, and Dylan and Jackson Kirk. Dr. Dolan is also survived by his brother James Dolan and was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Thomas Dolan. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling and led an active life of golfing, biking and working in his yard. He was member of the Knights of Columbus and actively involved in serving his parish, St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church on Hilton Head Island, S.C. Jack was dearly loved and respected by his family and his close friends. He will be missed for his unique sense of humor, humility and pragmatism. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 28, from 5 to 7 p.m., at The Island Funeral Home and Crematory, 4 Cardinal Rd., Hilton Head Island, S.C. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, on Saturday, July 30, at 10:30 a.m. preceded by saying of the Rosary at 10 a.m. led by the Knights of Columbus. Friends and family are welcome to gather at the home of Dr. Dolan following mass.
