John Smith Obituary

MENANDS John H. Smith, 82, of Park Hill, died Friday, June 3, 2005 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady. Born in Watervliet on May 19, 1923, he was the son of the late William B. and Margaret Thorns Smith. He was a graduate of Watervliet public schools and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed by Allegheny Ludlum (Al Tech Specialty Steel) in Watervliet for 35 years before retiring 20 years ago. He was a volunteer at Albany Memorial Hospital for over 10 years. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Troy where he also served as an usher. He was the husband of the late Marjorie Clark Smith; beloved father of Carolyn A. Smith of Troy, Sandra (Gary) Gardner of West Sand Lake and the late Richard J. Smith; grandfather of Jonathan (Lily) Gardner, Christopher Gardner, Jennifer (Martin) Coombs, Richard (Lisa) Smith and Michael Smith; great-grandfather of Jordan Oliksowycz-Gardner, Haley and Lauren Coombs and Zachary and Jacob Smith; brother of Harold Smith, Lester (Irene) Smith, Margaret Smith, Lois (Donald) Goldstein and Dorothy Smith, all of Watervliet and the late William, Frank, Hazel and Ruth Smith. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. from the Doran Funeral Home, 9 South Lake Avenue, Troy and at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 146 1st Street, Troy with Rev. Harold D. Carrier officiating. Interment will follow in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's Parish Nurse Program, 146 1st Street, Troy, NY 12180.

My heart is sad and goes out to all who will miss John, which is all of his family. I will always have a fond place in my heart for him. He always managed to make me laugh and was always fun when he visited me at the restaurant's I worked at. He will be missed by all who knew him.
