Joseph Szczepkowski Obituary

Szczepkowski, Joseph F. ALBANY Joseph F. Szczepkowski, 90, passed away Monday, November 7, 2016, at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland. Born in Albany he was the son of the late Marjan and Aniela Gasidlo Szczepkowski. Upon his graduation from Christian Brothers Academy Joseph attended 1 semester at Harvard and attended Siena College. He served in the United States Army Infantry as a sergeant during World War II in the European Campaign. Upon returning home he worked as a chemist at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation in Watervliet until 1969. He then went to work for the New York State Criminal Justice Service as an associate computer systems analyst until 1980 and for the New York State Department of Social Services until his retirement in 1987. Together with his wife Evelyn, Joe was very active as a communicant of the former St. Casmir's Church in Albany. They both served on the 100th anniversary committee, for which Evelyn made a beautiful banner. Joe helped the church whenever he was called, serving at funerals and decorating the church for holidays. Upon St. Casmir's closure, Joe and Evelyn became parishioners at St. Mary's Church in downtown Albany. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Evelyn Golda Szczepkowski in 2008. He is survived by his sisters, Felicia Mostek and Angela Pochman. He was predeceased by his sister, Genevieve; and his brothers, John and Stanley. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center for the wonderful care they provided to Joe. Joe was a wonderful brother, and a humble, kind, and generous man who was always willing to help anyone in need. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Joe's family on Thursday, November 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Lasak & Gigliotti Funeral Home, now located at 208 North Allen St., Albany. I was saddened to read about Joe's passing. I worked with Joe In Medicaid for many years. I loved joe's quiet company. I sat just a few desks over from him those many years. He was always there to help with a technical problem when I needed it.I have many fond memories of 'quiet joe' . One funny aside..A great line he always let out because he was positioned too near the microwave oven..." WHO IS COOKING OLD FISH IN THE OVEN AGAIN?" The culprit would then seek it out when he was not looking! One time at christmas I saw joe with a bottle of wine. This was back in the old days of card punching for the computers. I asked "Joe you don't drink at work?" He said it was a gift for the guys in the other building who process the cards...to insure that they take my job in proper time." He was definitely old school and knew how to make the 'system' run for us. He worked closely with Mike Tidd. One day Joe said he was retiring and we wished him well..I said what will you do?. He said he enjoyed the track. Family members please know this is one friend who who has many nice memories of Joe.

Joe was a great man. It was a pleasure to get to know him and his two sisters. We will greatly miss him.
