Lawrence Kirby Obituary

Kirby, Lawrence Jr. CHARLESTON, S.C. Lawrence Herbert Kirby, Jr. left this world on Saturday, March 17, 2012, which is especially fitting for the big Irish man who made Ireland his second home. Larry was born in Wilmington, Del. on June 2, 1938 and graduated from Pierre S. Dupont High School. His career included over 30 years in broadcasting, selling air time and then managing stations across the country. He left broadcasting to work with Metrosports to produce ACC basketball and football television coverage, and that moved him to the south where he settled for good. Larry was a brilliant entrepreneur and started a travel agency in Greensboro, N.C. which led to coordinating group trips around the world including packages for the Barcelona and Atlanta summer Olympic Games. Larry also received a license to sell real estate and he created the innovative company, Effective Advertising Seminars, where he shared his vast knowledge of advertising expertise. His wife, Linda passed away December 7, 1996 from complications of breast cancer. His wife, Joan passed away September 2010. Though grief stricken from losing two wives, Larry found happiness again with Sherrel Wilcox with whom he spent his last days. These unions brought together several blended families and Larry was proud to say he was dad to 13 children and grandpop to 11 grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Sherrell Wilcox-Kirby; his 102 year old mother, Elizabeth Kirby Price; sister Margaret Crozier; brothers, Thomas Kirby and Richard Kirby; and children, Kip Kirby, Carrie Kirby Swiderski, Kelly Inglis, Parker Kirby, Ian Holcomb, Jordan Holcomb, Heather Hill, Christian Hill, Jeremy Hill, Marilyn Gartley, Jennifer Gartley, Markham Gartley, Christine Gartley; and 11 grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Parks Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at 12 o'clock until the time of service. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Parks Funeral Home Chapel at 2 o'clock. Burial will be private. We find ourselves lucky to have had such a wonderful man in our lives. A man who touched the hearts of four separate families and made them one. A man, larger than life, who influenced people far beyond his reach. He was and continues to be an incredible inspiration to us all. Arrangements by Parks Funeral Home, 130 West 1st North Street, Summerville, SC 29483.

Larry was a very special man that touched many lives. To know LK was to admire, respect, and love him. He had a positive outlook and demeanor that was contagious. Larry launched numerous successful broadcast careers with his gudience, encouragement, and direction. I am not ashamed to say I loved that man. God bless his soul.

I am sending prayers and thoughts to all of Larry's family and dear friends. He was the most caring, funniest, and best "boss" I've ever worked with. Our years together at WWDC are the fondest memories. I'm so glad we all were able to get together in DC just a few years ago. For over 100 people to come together and turn back the clock for a weekend was a gift. As was Larry...
