Leroy Reid Obituary

Reid, Leroy TROY Leroy Reid, 91 of Troy, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 4, 2021. Leroy was born on March 16, 1930, in Cross, S.C. to the late Rebecca Reid and Fast Burden. On April 23, 1951, Leroy went to work at Allegheny-Ludlum Steel in Watervliet and would remain there for the next 43 years. Along with his close friend JP Riggins, the two would become among the longest tenured employees ever to work at the steel plant as highlighted in a 1994 Times Union article Men of Steel for 43 Years In the Mill. Upon retirement from the steel mill, Leroy found a second career at the Wal-Mart in Brunswick as a "door greeter." Truly emphasizing the term greeter, Leroy would often times be seen holding conversations with family, friends and total strangers on various topics including sports and his children. Leroy was very passionate about his family and his wife of 66 years, Hazel (Hockaday) Reid who passed away at age 88 in 2016. Leroy is survived by his children, Joyce (Steve) LaBoo of Seattle, Wash., Barbara (Tarry)Marbley, Tyrone (Jennifer) Reid of Troy, Iris (Tony) DeGruy of Lathrop, Calif. and Jason Reid of Troy; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Washington of Charleston, S.C., Priscilla Hosey of Albany, and Lucinda Washington of Brooklyn; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Along with his parents and wife, Leroy was predeceased by son, Jerry Reid; siblings, Nancy Crawford-Cole and Daisy Crawford. Funeral service will be held on Friday, August 13, in the Bethel Baptist Church, 2165 5th Ave., Troy, with Reverend Jackie Robinson officiating. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the church on Friday from 9 - 11 a.m. with homegoing services beginning at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leroy & Hazel Reid Educational Scholarship being established by the children.

Growing up he and wife Hazel were my second set of parents. I was in their house daily playing with my best friend Bobbie. He´s been blessed with long life and it´s hard to see him go, however life was never meant to be infinite. Will miss you. Sending virtual hugs to Bobbie and family. So sorry my presence isn´t face to face. Believe me I´m there in spirit and I´m praying for comfort and peace for everyone.
