McDermott, Lillian (Fields) PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. Lillian Fields McDermott, formerly of Watervliet, passed away at her home in Palm Beach Gardens, on May 8, 2013, after a long illness. She was 90. She was born in Troy, the daughter of Sophia Krause and Michael Fields. Lillian will be missed by her sister, Dorothy Andrews of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and her sister-in-law, Helen McDermott Casey of Dennis, Mass. Additionally, there are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends, all of whom made her days a little bit brighter as she prepared to be with our Heavenly Father and her late husband, Judge William F. McDermott. Lillian graduated from the College of St. Rose in Albany, and initially worked as a chemist for General Electric in Schenectady. She discovered her true calling as a teacher in the Maplewood School. She taught there her entire 32-year career. While teaching, she earned her master's degree from Russell Sage College in Troy. Teaching was her passion. She so loved the children. In some cases she actually had the privilege of teaching her former students' children. And it seemed in her small town they all remembered her. Lillian went to Mass daily. At St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet, where she was a member and many times before school at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, also in Watervliet. On more than several occasions she stopped at St. Francis Chapel on Wolf Road in Albany, both because of a convenient Mass schedule and its proximity to Macy's. During her final years as a shut-in in Florida, the Catholic Channel, EWTN, was watched every day at noon for the broadcast of the Mass. Though a quadriplegic at her death, her faith remained strong and she never complained. A memorial service was held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Ponte Vedra Beach. She was buried next to her husband in the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cemetery in Maplewood, in the Fields family plot. Condolences may be expressed at the Parker Brothers website,

Mrs. McDermott was one of my favorite teachers at Maplewood School. She always made us feel special. I was just recently telling my daughter and granddaughter about how she always had such a great suntan. It's funny some things that we remember as kids. My thoughts and prayers are with all of her family and friends. What an angel Heaven just welcomed!

She was an institution at Maplewood school. A great teacher, I can always picture her smile as we filed into class. I would see her for lunch sometimes when I came into town to visit my Mom until her health became an issue. She was an absolute class act and will be missed.
