Martin Hughes Obituary

Hughes, Martin J. Jr. MENANDS Martin J. Hughes Jr., 90, of Dutch Village Apartments, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at the Samuel Stratton VA in Albany following a brief illness. Born in Troy on December 5, 1920, Marty was the son of the late Martin J. and Catherine Hickey Hughes. He was raised in Mechanicville and graduated from the LaSalle Institute in Troy, class of 1939. Marty later attended Siena College in Loudonville and St. Michael's College in Burlington, Vt. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the Pacific theater of operations. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of lieutenant and returned to the Capital District. He was employed in the purchasing department of the D&H Railway. In 1942 he was married to his beloved wife, the former Mary Ellen (Joe/Mame) Dunn and the two enjoyed 59 years of marriage until her death in 2001. They resided in Newtonville. Marty enjoyed a long and distinguished career in sales and management at many notable automotive firms in the area, Nicholas Auto in Menands from where he recently retired, Nemith Motors, Keeler Motor Car Company, Nemer Group, Langan Automotive Group, Airway Motors and Orange Motors. He always prided himself on his work ethic and being the consummate salesman. The boys (the three brothers) would often muse over how many cars Dad had sold during his professional career and conservatively arrived at an astonishing number of 10,000 plus. He was a longtime communicant of Historic St. Mary's Church on Capitol Hill in downtown Albany where he served as a lector and usher. He was a member of the Wolfert's Roost Country Club, the Country Club of Troy and was a member of the Holy Name Society at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Latham. Marty's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to doctors and staff of the Veterans Hospital in Albany for the concern they showed and the care they gave to him during his four month stay. Marty is survived by his three sons and their wives, Martin J. (Dianne) Hughes III of Summerfield, Fla., M. Brian (Marta Pat) Hughes of Loudonville and Peter D. (Sandra) Hughes of Niskayuna; his grandchildren, M. John Hughes IV of Pooler, Ga., Matthew M. (Amie) Hughes of Pelham Manor, N.Y., Mark C. (Heather) Hughes of Leesburg, Va., Bridget H. (Brian) Graber of North Greenbush and Shannon M. Hughes of Niskayuna; his great-grandchildren, Luke, Alesandra, Maya, Johnathan, Katherine, Madeleine and Aidan. Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral today, at 10 a.m. in Historic St. Mary's Church on Capital Hill, 10 Lodge St., Albany, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery, Mechanicville. Public visiting hours were held on Wednesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Rd., Latham. In lieu of flowers, donations to the LaSalle Institute, 174 Williams Rd., Troy, NY, 12180 in memory of Martin J. Hughes would be appreciated. I only knew Marty as one of the lucky few who would often assist him to his car after the 10am mass on Sunday. He always welcomed a helping hand and was quick to introduce himself as "Marty Hughes". In a short time, one learned quickly the love and devotion he had for his wife and three boys. He was a proud man who I became fond of after each encounter with him. I learned of his passing through prayers at church this morning. I will miss seeing him at church but I know he is at peace with his true love. My prayers to his family.

I first met Marty in the late 90's when I was a Sales Rep at Channel 13 and he was at Nicholas Auto Sales. Over the years we had many a chat about Sales and his long distinguished career in automotive sales. He was something...always smiling and positive....I'm sure he is in heaven with his bride. Rest in Peace Marty. My condolences to the Hughes family.
