Mary Shearer Obituary

Shearer, Mary Igo ALBANY Mary Igo Shearer passed away peacefully on November 15, 2017, after a beautiful 95 years. Mary was the daughter of the late Delia O'Gorman and Peter Igo. Born and educated in Albany, Mary was a home-maker and loving wife and mother. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, home decorating and baking for those she loved. She took great pride in caring for children in her neighborhood. She worked in retail in the children's department at Denby's in Stuyvesant Plaza for 14 years. She was the beloved wife of the late Harry Shearer for 53 years; and the mother of Dianne (Ed) Socher of Maine, the late Harry Jr. and Carol (John) Lettko of California. She was adored by her four grandchildren, Josh Poteat of Virginia, Kira Poteat of North Carolina, and Krista and Kelsey Lettko of California. She is survived by her sister, Rose (Sam) Sampson of California; and many nieces and nephews, whom she loved very much. She loved spending time with the "Big Five" (her siblings and their spouses) many years ago. Mary was a volunteer member of the charitable organization RSVP; the Parkinson's Group and Diabetics Association. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary's Church. For the last seven and half years, Mary lived in sunny California, so she could be closer to her youngest daughter, Carol and her family. Mary was well loved at her assisted living residence volunteering in the cafe, going to pottery and art classes; dancing at the Happy Hours; and enjoying so many musical events. She loved spending time in the sun out in the beautiful gardens enjoying a nice cup of tea. She will be fondly remembered for her laughter, her spunk, her quick wit, her kind spirit and for running in the halls at age 90! Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mary's family on Monday, December 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany. I did not know your mom but her obituary tells us how one can make the best of life at any stage. I pray that if I make it to her age, I will be able to contribute and participate in every way possible and dance until the end! May her memories keep your family smiling.

What can you say when one hears of the passing of the woman who was the matriarch of RuthTerrace? Many of the times, I found myself at their home for picnics in the backyard or playing pool in the basement when Josh would be up from North Carolina.

I will miss the, Hello, how are you doing, but will cherish the memories of her warmth and compassion she provided to me during my childhood. I am so sorry for your loss. Know that she is now with Harry.

Diane, Carol and families. I am so sorry to learn of your mom's passing. We were very close neighbors on Ruth Terr. Miss the "ole" days. It was a great childhood and many fond memories of your mom. Last time I saw her I asked if I could call her "Mary", as a child I always called her "Mrs. Shearer", and she said it was okay. I think I was at least 55 at that time. It was pretty funny and weird to call her "Mary". Just a little memory. All the best to you all. Sandra Roselan Hendery
