Spiak, Matthew
LATHAM - The world lost a true original when Matthew Thomas Spiak, of Latham, N.Y., passed away peacefully, on November 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, after a battle with cancer. To know Matt was to know strength, loyalty, humor, and a tireless work ethic - all wrapped in a heart that never stopped giving.
Matt was a builder in every sense of the word. He owned and operated his own construction company, where he specialized in building cellphone towers and mastering the art of concrete work. Whether he was running an excavator with the steady hand of a craftsman or teaching someone the right way to get a job done, Matt's dedication, precision, and pride in his work left a lasting mark - on both the landscape and the people who worked beside him.
When he wasn't hard at work, you could find Matt outdoors, where he was happiest. He loved boating and spending time in the Adirondack Mountains - hunting, fishing, hiking, and skiing - and he was always quick to remind everyone, with his trademark grin, that Indian Lake "sucks." He also loved spending time in Florida, soaking up the sun at the beach or at the sandbar with his family.
Matt could never sit still for long. He was always the first to show up when someone needed help fixing or remodeling their home. Matt found joy in helping others and took pride in doing things right. His generosity, craftsmanship, and sense of humor made him someone people naturally wanted to be around.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Palavia Spiak; and his brothers, Anthony Jr. and Joseph. Above all, Matt was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and godfather. He shared an enduring love with his wife, Stephanie, and took immense pride in his family. He is survived by his son, Matthew J. Spiak and his spouse, Bianca, along with their children, Ayla Grace and Tucker Matthew; and by his daughter, Megan Farrelly and her spouse, Thomas Patrick Farrelly IV, along with their children, Thomas Patrick Farrelly V and Martin Matthew Farrelly. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary Beth Panock (Richard), and Thomas Spiak; as well as many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who will miss him dearly.
Matt's family and friends will remember him as someone who built more than towers; he built a life filled with purpose, laughter, and love. His stories, his work, and his spirit will live on in every life he touched and every project he left behind. Though he's gone too soon, the mark he left will stand as strong and steady as anything he ever built.
A private celebration of Matt's life will be held at a future date in the home he built for his family, to gather to share memories and honor a life well lived. Contributions in Matt's memory can be made to The Community Hospice Foundation, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, N.Y. 12208.
