Melanie Russom Obituary
MECHANICVILLE - Melanie Wells Russom, 70, of Green St., sadly died Monday, Dec. 23, at Albany Medical Center, following several illnesses including Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Born in Herkimer, May 27, 1954, daughter of the late Robert and Joyce Wells, Melanie earned a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics from S.U.N.Y. Oneonta and her Master's degree in Special Education from Russell Sage College. She found her calling as a special education teacher. She worked at The Charlton School teaching home economics becoming a champion for her high school students teaching them real world skills. She had a knack for relating to children, helping them uncover their strengths and find their own voice. She spent the latter half of her career teaching preschool special education as an in-home, Itinerant ABA/AVB special education teacher at Helping Hands Preschool in Clifton Park. She was a fierce advocate for her students both at The Charlton School and Helping Hands.
A woman with a welcoming and spirited smile, Melanie enjoyed crocheting, quilting, cooking, but most of all, connecting with new people, and spending time with her grandchildren. She made friends everywhere she went, and was known for her outgoing personality and down-to-earth, accepting nature.
Survivors include her husband, Ronald Russom; whom she met in college and married July 8, 1978. Also her son, Braden Russom (wife, Melissa); daughter, Caitlin Larabee (husband, Ryan); and grandchildren, Kate, Cora, Rylin, Brogan, Alexis and Aria; brothers, Jack and Ki Wells; and sister, Donna (Jim) Adams; nieces, Amber Schermerhorn, Katrina and Jenny Wells; and nephew, Rob Russom; and dozens of grateful students and parents whose lives are better for her work.
Calling Hours will be held on Saturday, from 2-3 p.m., at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville, with a short service by Rev. Michael Tood at 3 p.m.
